64. -Colt's NeCk, and indeed entirely across <strong>the</strong> State, lies 'between<strong>the</strong> first and second beds <strong>of</strong> marl• , .... i . ....'• _':A bed much resembling beach .sand, witll a very fewmarlgrains scattered through it, lies between tt!c second a_l thirdmarl beds. t• :The several beds <strong>of</strong> marl are each made up <strong>of</strong> distinct layers,which vary in appearance and in properties. ' . _,In <strong>the</strong> first bed five distinet layers may be recognised. :• 1. A layer <strong>of</strong> sand and fine gravel, from; two to four ormore feet in thickness. This is very distlnetly sepurp.ted frbm<strong>the</strong> clay which lies immediately under it. It contains numejrousfossils, a considerable proportigu <strong>of</strong> marl grainsj and i8valuable as a manure. It is known as' sand marl. ' , . ,• 2. A layer, <strong>of</strong> nearly pure marl grains_ <strong>of</strong> variable .thick:hess, averaging perhaps four feet.. A little blackis h clay ismixed with <strong>the</strong> marl, from which it is generally known as$lack:_arl. It contains but few, fossils. As a manure it ishighly prized. Though always found, it is, not .very. disrtinctIy separated from <strong>the</strong> next layer. _ • :,• 8..A_ layer <strong>of</strong> from twelve to sixteeu feet in:thickness,known as/,lue or g_y marl, from its containing a considerableamount <strong>of</strong> a drab colored clays inclining to bluish or grayish_It has numbers <strong>of</strong> very large and heavy oyster shells in it-_generally <strong>the</strong>re is a streak from eight inches to two feet thick,which:is almost solid with _bells. "This layer is very highlyprized as a quick and lasting.fertilizer. It changes graduallyinto <strong>the</strong> one next above. . _ .4. Three or:four feet <strong>of</strong> black _arl, almost exactly likothat <strong>of</strong> No. 2. It is not found distinedy'marked in all p]aees,5. Dark colored marl six or eight feet thick, containingfewer and fewer <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> marl grains in its higher parts, and atlast only to be dlstinguished,from <strong>the</strong> dark elay!iutp which itruns, by <strong>the</strong> thin flaky shells scattered through it.
