F. Fettit, Shark River, and in that" <strong>of</strong>J. S. Furman, near Lower Squankum, it is not so thick. Tilton, <strong>of</strong> Shark' River_ and in those <strong>of</strong>T. Longstrcct_ T. Weeks_ and J. S: Forman, <strong>of</strong> Squankum.Fossils are not very abundant in this bed.. A few*casts,and still more rarely shells, have been found in <strong>the</strong> lowerlayer ; it is not known that any have been found in <strong>the</strong> middlelayer ; in <strong>the</strong> upper, casts and impressions <strong>of</strong> shells arc found.They have not been examined with sufficient careto determine<strong>the</strong> species ; <strong>the</strong>y are, however_ entirely different from those <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> two lower beds.The accompanying sections across <strong>the</strong> marl stratum, show_thcpositions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> several beds. The scale <strong>of</strong> distances is twomiles to one inch.
