the objects of the survey) in compliance with the la_') demand..Some of the results of my researches were as follows:The first complete map of the State was compiled byThomas Gordon, from various local surveys) together withsome original surveys procured by au act of the Legislature,passed November twenty-eighth, eighteen hundred'andtwentytwo,authorizing a loan to Tl_omas Gordon of' one thousanddollars, to enable him to obtain additional surveys for thepurpose of making a State map. This map_known as Gor--den's map, was completed and published in the year eighteenhundred and twenty-eight. Daring the same year, upon thesixth of March, a resolution was ,passed by the Legislature,authorizing the Governor to subscribe for one hundred andtwenty-five copies. On the fourteenth of Febru_.ry_ eighteenhundred and thirty-one, the Legislature passed an act authorizingthe treas_er to cancel Gordon's bond, and the Governor t• to take one hundred and twenty-five additional copies at onethousand dollars.A second edition of the State map was revised, corrected,and improved, by l_bert E. Horner_ by a resolution of theLegislature , appropriating cue thousand dollam, passed Feb.ruary twenty-fifth_ eighteen hundred and forty-seven. Thisis the last and most reliable edition of the State map. Everyother map, made since the publication of this cdition_ has fbeen compiled therefrom; and the manner in which this wasmade was sufficient to satisfy me of its want of accuracy, andof its insufficiencyas a basis for the geological purposes of thesurvey.
