CRITERIA FOR THE SELECTION OF FIELD INSTRUCTORSField instructors are nominated by the agency and approved by the School to providepracticum instruction to students. Field instructors select specific student assignmentsand instruct students in the skills necessary to fulfill these assignments in relation to thestudent’s course work.Field instructors for foundation students should have an MSW. However, field instructorswith a BSW and several years of human services experience may be approved. Fieldinstructors for concentration students must have an MSW and two years post-MSWhuman service experience. It is expected that field instructors have had formal trainingand experience in one of the school’s concentration areas. Typically, the student isassigned to a field instructor on the basis of the student’s major concentration choice.The instruction of students can be shared between various agency personnel, but theSchool-appointed field instructor assumes overall responsibility for field instruction.Field instructors must be on-site and on duty for at least 10 hours per week for foundationstudents and 16 hours per week for concentration students. During those periods whenfield instructor availability is not possible, other qualified staff members must beavailable for backup or consultation to the students.Field instructors are strongly encouraged to participate in Field Instructor trainingprovided by the Clark Atlanta University, Georgia State University, and University ofGeorgia Field Education Collaborative. Detailed information about field instructortraining workshops will be provided on a regular basis to all agencies that have a studentassigned to them.Persons nominated to be field instructors should be members of an agency staff whoshow:1. evidence of competence in the practice of social work2. concern for continuing professional development3. commitment to the teaching function of social work education4. possess the interest in and have the time available for the regularinstruction of students18
CHAPTER 3PRACTICUM POLICIESI. GENERAL INFORMATIONThe following are general policies that apply to field education. Students are expected toread and adhere to these policies. Prior to entering field, all students will sign a contractacknowledging their agreement to these policies.Academic EligibilityFoundation Practicum: MSW students must earn a minimum grade of B or better inpractice methods courses (SOWK 6033 and 6074) in order to enroll in foundationpracticum (SOWK 6055).Concentration Practicum: Students must earn a minimum grade of B in culturaldiversity (SOWK 6082), foundation practicum (SOWK 6055), and Social Work withFamilies and Groups (SOWK 6044) in order to advance to the concentration year.Students cannot enter concentration practicum with Incompletes (I) in any course. Thus,all I’s must be completed before the beginning of the semester in which the student isscheduled to enter practicum. Failure to complete full responsibilities for course workwill delay a student’s entry into concentration practicum. Additionally, studentsmust have a GPA of 3.0 or higher before they can enter concentration practicum.Students in concentration practicum must receive a minimum grade of B in the firstsemester of SOWK 7055 to continue in practicum for the second semester. If a studentearns a grade of B- or lower in SOWK 7055, the student will be required to repeat thecourse.Background Checks: Students must be willing to submit to a possible backgroundcheck on issues such as prior arrests and convictions for felonies and misdemeanors,abuse of illegal drugs, and certain motor vehicle offenses. If there are previous records orcriminal charges pending against the student, s/he must submit a letter of explanationwith the field application. Additionally, students are advised to review any criminalbackground record for accuracy and completeness prior to having a practicum agencyconduct its own review.Inadequate Performance in Practicum: If a student fails foundation practicum (gradeof B- or lower), the student must retake the course. If the student fails foundationpracticum (grade of B- or lower) a second time, the student will be dismissed from theSocial Work program. If a student fails concentration practicum (grade B- or lower) ineither of the two semesters, the student will be subject to an academic review with theintent to determine the student’s suitability for continuation in the program. If the studentis offered the opportunity to retake the concentration practicum course and fails it again(grade B- or lower), the student will be dismissed from the program. If a student failsone foundation practicum course (grade B- or lower) and then fails a concentrationpracticum course (grade B- or lower), the student will be dismissed from the program. If19
