3 Establishment of an apprenticeship or tra<strong>in</strong>eeship<br />

Once the tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g contract has been received, approved <strong>and</strong> registered by State Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g Services,<br />

the employer will be sent an approval letter confirm<strong>in</strong>g that tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g arrangements are <strong>in</strong> place.<br />

The approval letter specifies the date the tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g contract has or will become b<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g. The<br />

apprentice or tra<strong>in</strong>ee is also sent a copy of the approval letter.<br />

The Australa<strong>in</strong> Apprenticeship Centre (AAC) should provide both the employer <strong>and</strong> the apprentice/tra<strong>in</strong>ee with a copy<br />

of the signed tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g contract. The contract sets out employer, apprentice or tra<strong>in</strong>ee responsibilities <strong>and</strong> obligations<br />

dur<strong>in</strong>g the course of the tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g arrangement. If either party does not have a signed copy of the tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g contract, they<br />

should contact their AAC.<br />

The orig<strong>in</strong>al contract is reta<strong>in</strong>ed by the employer’s nom<strong>in</strong>ated AAC after approval.<br />

The registered tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g organisation (RTO) is required <strong>to</strong> develop a full tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g plan, <strong>in</strong> consultation with the employer<br />

<strong>and</strong> the apprentice or tra<strong>in</strong>ee, with<strong>in</strong> 6-12 weeks of commencement of the apprenticeship or tra<strong>in</strong>eeship. The tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

plan will set out details of how, when <strong>and</strong> by whom the tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> assessment will be conducted. If the RTO<br />

requires the employer <strong>to</strong> ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> records of the apprentice or tra<strong>in</strong>ee’s on-the-job tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g or skills development <strong>in</strong><br />

the workplace, this should also be specified <strong>in</strong> the tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g plan. The RTO must provide both the employer <strong>and</strong> the<br />

apprentice/tra<strong>in</strong>ee with a copy of the full tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g plan.<br />

For school-based <strong>apprenticeships</strong> <strong>and</strong> school-based <strong>tra<strong>in</strong>eeships</strong>, the full tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g plan must be prepared prior <strong>to</strong><br />

lodgement of the application <strong>and</strong> provided <strong>to</strong> State Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g Services with the tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g contract by the AAC.<br />

More <strong>in</strong>formation on tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g plans is available <strong>in</strong> Section 4.2.5<br />

When the employer or apprentice/tra<strong>in</strong>ee telephones or writes <strong>to</strong> their nom<strong>in</strong>ated AAC or local State Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g Services<br />

office, they should quote their tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g contract identity number (usually referred <strong>to</strong> as the TCID).<br />
