Tra<strong>in</strong>ee – an employee who has been employed <strong>in</strong> a recognised tra<strong>in</strong>eeship vocation <strong>and</strong> who has entered <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> a<br />

tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g contract with his/her employer under the Apprenticeship <strong>and</strong> Tra<strong>in</strong>eeship Act 2001.<br />

Tra<strong>in</strong>eeship – a tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g arrangement under which the tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g contract b<strong>in</strong>ds the employer <strong>and</strong> the tra<strong>in</strong>ee from the<br />

end of the probationary period until the completion of the term of the tra<strong>in</strong>eeship.<br />

Tra<strong>in</strong>ee apprentice – a person employed <strong>in</strong> a tra<strong>in</strong>ee apprenticeship under the Apprenticeship <strong>and</strong> Tra<strong>in</strong>eeship<br />

Act 2001. Tra<strong>in</strong>ee apprentices receive the same on-the-job <strong>and</strong> formal tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> are eligible <strong>to</strong> ga<strong>in</strong> the same<br />

qualifications <strong>and</strong> certificates as other apprentices.<br />

Tra<strong>in</strong>ee apprenticeship – an apprenticeship, ma<strong>in</strong>ly <strong>in</strong> the construction <strong>and</strong> furnish<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dustries, <strong>in</strong> which the tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

contract can be broken by either party simply by giv<strong>in</strong>g notice as required under the relevant <strong>in</strong>dustrial award or<br />

agreement. Tra<strong>in</strong>ee <strong>apprenticeships</strong> are restricted <strong>to</strong> those trades <strong>in</strong> which the relevant <strong>in</strong>dustrial award or agreement<br />

makes specific provision for them. Rates of pay for tra<strong>in</strong>ee apprentices may be slightly more than for other apprentices<br />

employed under the same award or agreement.<br />

Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g contract – a contract which establishes an apprenticeship or tra<strong>in</strong>eeship under the Apprenticeship <strong>and</strong><br />

Tra<strong>in</strong>eeship Act 2001. (See also national tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g contract.)<br />

Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g packages – comprehensive publications developed by <strong>in</strong>dustry <strong>to</strong> support the national vocational education<br />

<strong>and</strong> tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g system. Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g packages are made up of endorsed components (national competency st<strong>and</strong>ards,<br />

assessment <strong>guide</strong>l<strong>in</strong>es <strong>and</strong> qualifications) <strong>and</strong> non-endorsed components (which may <strong>in</strong>clude learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong><br />

assessment resources).<br />

Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g plan – outl<strong>in</strong>es the course of formal tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g the apprentice/tra<strong>in</strong>ee will undertake, with a registered tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

organisation, <strong>to</strong> ga<strong>in</strong> a nationally recognised qualification. It <strong>in</strong>cludes <strong>in</strong>formation on the mode <strong>and</strong> dates of delivery of<br />

the tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, the units of competency that will make up the qualification, details of any RPL or RCC that will be applied<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>formation about the role the employer will play <strong>in</strong> record<strong>in</strong>g details of on-the-job tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g. The tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g plan (or a<br />

summary of it) is attached <strong>to</strong> the national tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g contract when apply<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> establish an apprenticeship or tra<strong>in</strong>eeship.<br />

NB If a summary is provided <strong>in</strong>itially, a full tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g plan must be developed by the registered tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g organisation,<br />

<strong>in</strong> consultation with the employer <strong>and</strong> apprentice /tra<strong>in</strong>ee, with<strong>in</strong> 6-12 weeks of the apprentice / tra<strong>in</strong>ee commenc<strong>in</strong>g<br />

work with the employer.<br />

VETAB – the Vocational Education <strong>and</strong> Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g Accreditation Board (or VETAB as it is usually known) is the statu<strong>to</strong>ry<br />

authority responsible for accredit<strong>in</strong>g vocational education <strong>and</strong> tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g courses <strong>and</strong> register<strong>in</strong>g tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g organisations<br />

that provide vocational education <strong>and</strong> tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> New South Wales.<br />

Vocational Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g Tribunal (VTT) – the statu<strong>to</strong>ry body established under the provisions of the Apprenticeship<br />

<strong>and</strong> Tra<strong>in</strong>eeship Act 2001. The Tribunal’s functions <strong>in</strong>clude resolv<strong>in</strong>g compla<strong>in</strong>ts, recognition of trade skills acquired<br />

outside the <strong>NSW</strong> apprenticeship <strong>and</strong> tra<strong>in</strong>eeship system, adm<strong>in</strong>ister<strong>in</strong>g tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g contracts, <strong>and</strong> consider<strong>in</strong>g<br />

applications for the transfer, suspension, cancellation <strong>and</strong> variation of <strong>apprenticeships</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>tra<strong>in</strong>eeships</strong>.<br />

Work evidence <strong>guide</strong> – is another name for a Competency record book - a log book that provides evidence that an<br />

apprentice or tra<strong>in</strong>ee has completed specific tasks <strong>and</strong> ga<strong>in</strong>ed knowledge <strong>and</strong> skills on the job. The log book supports<br />

formal tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g be<strong>in</strong>g delivered by the registered tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g organisation, <strong>and</strong> may be used by the registered tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

organisation <strong>in</strong> mak<strong>in</strong>g an assessment of competency.<br />
