Her researchinvolves the ethnomusicological study <strong>of</strong> Latin dance music in the US, and particularly she is interested inwhat the popularity <strong>of</strong> genres like salsa, rumba, and tango among non-Latinos can tell us about hownotions <strong>of</strong> ethnicity, race, and class are shaped through music and dance. She conducted fieldwork indancehalls in the midwestern United <strong>State</strong>s. She considers the dancehall as an important site for crossculturalencounters and the construction <strong>of</strong> identity. Boss was previously an assistant pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> musicat Bowdoin <strong>College</strong> in Brunswick, Maine.Carol Hess, Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Historical <strong>Music</strong>ologyCarol Hess received her Ph.D. in musicology from the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> California, Davis. She specializes inmusic <strong>of</strong> Spain and the Americas, and has received grants from the Spanish Ministry <strong>of</strong> Culture, theNational Endowment for the Humanities, the Committee for Cultural Cooperation Between AmericanUniversities and Spain's Ministry Of Culture, and the Institut d'Estudis Catalans (Barcelona). Her book,Manuel de Falla and Modernism in Spain, 1898-1936 (<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Chicago, 2001), received fourprizes, including the ASCAP-Deems Taylor Award and the Robert M. Stevenson prize for outstandingscholarship in Iberian music. He is a former member <strong>of</strong> the San AntonioSymphony, and has performed as percussionist and conductor for various radio and television broadcasts,including several productions <strong>of</strong> the WKAR-TV (East Lansing, <strong>Michigan</strong>) "Artistry <strong>of</strong> . . ." series and"<strong>Music</strong> from <strong>Michigan</strong> <strong>State</strong>," as well as radio and television broadcasts on BBC-TV, WNET, andWFMT, and PBS "Great Performances" series. Largeyis a specialist in Caribbean music, especially Haitian classical and religious music and is author <strong>of</strong> VodouNation: Haitian Art <strong>Music</strong> and Cultural Nationalism (<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Chicago Press, 2006) and is a co-author<strong>of</strong> the revised and expanded second edition <strong>of</strong> Caribbean Currents: Caribbean <strong>Music</strong> from Rumba toReggae (Temple <strong>University</strong> Press, second edition, 2006).
