Students must have successfully completed the appropriate methods course for the intendedplacement. For example, to student teach in instrumental (band) music, MUS455: TeachingInstrumental <strong>Music</strong>, must be taken and passed.MUS495: Student Teaching Seminar, is required <strong>of</strong> all student teachers. The seminar meetsevery Wednesday from 4:00-5:30pm during the student teaching semester. Students are alsorequired to enroll in either TE801 (Fall student teachers) or TE803 (Spring student teachers)during your student teaching semester. Student teachers may not take any other courses duringthe student teaching semester.<strong>MSU</strong> student teaching placements will not be made in schools more than 50 miles away fromcampus. The only exceptions to this policy are cases <strong>of</strong> extreme financial or family hardship, andwill be handled on a case-by-case basis. Studentteaching applications are also available online at:http://www.music.msu.edu/academic/studentteaching.php#articles.ACADEMIC DISHONESTYThe following statement <strong>of</strong> <strong>University</strong> policy was approved by the Academic Council and theAcademic Senate, and serves as the definitive statement <strong>of</strong> principle and procedure to be used ininstances <strong>of</strong> academic dishonesty.The principles <strong>of</strong> truth and honesty are recognized as fundamental to a community <strong>of</strong> teachersand scholars. The <strong>University</strong> expects that both faculty and students will honor these principlesand in so doing protect the validity <strong>of</strong> <strong>University</strong> grades. This means that all academic work willbe done by the student to whom it is assigned, without unauthorized aid <strong>of</strong> any kind (see GeneralStudent Regulation 1.00, Scholarship and Grades, for specific regulations). Instructors, for theirpart, will exercise care in the planning and supervision <strong>of</strong> academic work, so that honest effortwill be positively encouraged.If any instance <strong>of</strong> academic dishonesty is discovered by an instructor, it is his or herresponsibility to take appropriate action. Depending on his or her judgment <strong>of</strong> the particularcase, he or she may give a failing grade to the student on the assignment or for the course.In instances where a failing grade in a course is given only for academic dishonesty, theinstructor will notify the student’s academic dean in writing <strong>of</strong> the circumstances. The studentwho receives a failing grade based on a charge <strong>of</strong> academic dishonesty may appeal a judgmentmade by a department, school, or a college. Refer to Academic Freedom for Students at<strong>Michigan</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>University</strong>.When in the judgment <strong>of</strong> the academic dean, action other than, or in addition to, a failing grade iswarranted, the dean will refer the case to the college-level hearing board, which shall haveoriginal jurisdiction. In cases <strong>of</strong> ambiguous jurisdiction, the appropriate judiciary will berandomly selected by the Assistant Provost from one <strong>of</strong> the three core colleges. Appeals fromthe judgment may be made to the All-<strong>University</strong> Academic Integrity Review Board. Refer toAcademic Freedom for Students at <strong>Michigan</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>University</strong>.GRIEVANCE IN THE COLLEGE OF MUSICThe “Academic Freedom for Students at <strong>Michigan</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>University</strong>” (AFR) and the “GraduateStudent Rights and Responsibilities at <strong>Michigan</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>University</strong>”(GSRR) documents establish the rights and responsibilities <strong>of</strong> <strong>MSU</strong> students and prescribeprocedures for resolving allegations <strong>of</strong> violations <strong>of</strong> those rights through formal grievances. Inaccordance with the AFR and the GSRR, the <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Music</strong> has established the followingprocedures for adjudicating student academic grievances. These grievance procedures also canbe used to resolve disputes regarding allegations <strong>of</strong> academic dishonesty and violations <strong>of</strong>pr<strong>of</strong>essional standards. (See AFR 2.4.2, 2.4.4.1, 2.4.4.2, 2.4.6, 2.4.6.2, 2.4.8 and 2.4.9; GSRR5.1.1, 5.1.2 5.1.3 5.3.2. 5.3.5, 5.4.1, and 5.5.2.)Students may not request a grievance hearing to grieve dissatisfaction with the competence <strong>of</strong>instruction. (See AFR and GSRR 2.2.1 and 2.2.2.A student who believes an instructor, including a graduate teaching assistant, has violated her orhis academic rights should first attempt to resolve the dispute in an informal discussion with theinstructor. (See AFR 2.4.2; GSRR 5.3.1 and 5.3.2.)Students may not seek redress through a grievance hearing regarding alleged incompetence <strong>of</strong>instruction. (See AFR 2.2.1 and 2.2.2; GSRR 2.2.1 and 2.2.2.)If the dispute remains unresolved after discussion with the instructor, the student should consultthe Chair <strong>of</strong> his/her respective applied or academic area in which the dispute occurred, theappropriate Associate Dean <strong>of</strong> the <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Music</strong> (graduate or undergraduate), and/or the<strong>University</strong> Ombudsman for assistance. (See AFR 2.4.2; GSRR 5.3.2.)<strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Music</strong>Studio Protocol regarding Physical ContactThe <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Music</strong> faculty and administration are committed to providing the best possibleeducational experience for every student enrolled in a music course. <strong>Music</strong> learning takes placein a variety <strong>of</strong> ways, but all students in each music degree program have the curricularrequirement to enroll in private music lessons. Private lessons constitute an integral part <strong>of</strong> thecollege music major experience. The nature <strong>of</strong> private lessons is unique in that it establishes aregular one-to-one teaching model. It is very much a “power” relationship.At times, presentation <strong>of</strong> pedagogical concepts may require a certain amount <strong>of</strong> physical contactbetween faculty and student, including issues <strong>of</strong> breathing, posture, positioning <strong>of</strong> an instrument,sound projection, stage presence, etc. Demonstrations <strong>of</strong> this kind can be very illuminating andedifying.62
