FIRE IN OUR HEARTSCITY ON A HILLA child went home from our meeting and wrote a song:The mountains of pride, the mountains of sin,Shall all flow down at the presence of himWho comes with fire!That was our expectation. Revival was the talk of the day.Routine was over and we were moving on.There were many new faces at the first leaders’ gatheringof the year as over a hundred of us met at Cornhill. The ministrywas on awakening. Revivals, we noted, were shortlived;they ran their course and died. Often it was from lack of commitment,but that wasn’t our problem. Over-familiarity withGod was our crime.‘This is the one I esteem,’ we read, ‘he who is humble andcontrite in spirit, and trembles at my word’ (Is 66:2). Ourhearts were searched that evening and there were tears. Atmidnight we stepped out silently into the cold night, muchsubdued.The following Friday the evangelists stayed in and prayedfor a mission we were planning to hold the next day in Rugby.There was more weeping and a strong expectancy that Godwould move among us. In Rugby the ministry was very urgentand the word cut home, exposing our indifference, selfinterestand lack of oneness. During the bread and wine manyknelt together and wept.Judgement had begun at the house of God. Programmeswere suspended and for two months no notice sheets appeared.The elders’ meeting was cancelled and we held achurch meeting instead. Noel spoke of revival. Real desire219
