This was what God required of us: ‘to share your breadwith the hungry’ and to ‘bring the homeless poor into yourhouse’ (Is 58:7, RSV). There would soon be room for 250 newpeople in our houses, our businesses prospered and resourceshad grown. Everything was the Lord’s and we wanted to shareit with others.We set targets for 50 church-households, with 250 leaders,250 servant groups, 250 celibates, 250 new members, 250new residents. 250 was the number! There were now 250 onthe Prayer Watch, too. The work was expanding and we allwanted to hear from the front line and give prayer support.Evangelists sent in their reports to Jesus Happenings, amonthly news-sheet. They were getting bolder in followingtheir spiritual intuitions. John Wimber’s book Power Evangelism88 had inspired us and we expected ‘power confrontations’of the supernatural.Jesus Happenings reported that in Leicester a broken wristwas visibly healed, and in Tunstall they prayed with a woman,rebuking demonic powers. Shrieking and shaking followedand evil spirits were cast out. They left a New Testament andsoon she was born again and healed of a ten-year back complaint.Jesus Happenings also told how a Christian in Loughboroughasked our young evangelists to pray with a friend withleukaemia. That week she saw her consultant.‘What pain killers are you taking?’ he asked.‘None,’ she said. ‘There is no pain.’272
