Building thechurch and bringing the gospel was nothing if not heartbreak.We felt, deep down, that an amazing spiritual revolution wouldsweep Britain. But, as our songs reminded us, this meant ‘sowingin tears’, and ‘bleeding with Jesus’.A new wave of prophetic leadership emerged. Steve ‘Capable’said goodbye to his sheep (woolly variety) at Plough Farmto rebuild the damaged household in London. Pete Valiantleft Shalom farmhouse to take the helm at Cornhill. He arrivedlike Nehemiah; sat, listened and grieved. Then he rolledup his sleeves and got down to work. God gave Pete one wordfor Cornhill: ‘Behold I make all things new.’Huw, an Oxford man and old friend of mine, came to thefore combining school-teaching with magazine editing,church-planting and writing the occasional hymn. Huw oozedwarmth and friendship and was a brilliant advert for celibacy.He wanted to see its cutting edge sharpened. ‘Go for itif you dare!’ he wrote in Jesus Lifestyle:The spirit of the world has invaded the church in this wholearea. But God is raising up a band of spiritually undiluted menand women whose sacrificial offering and prophetic sharpnesswill be the strength of the future. 106Huw, Pete and Steve (and a married Rufus) were a part ofGod’s move to establish the church in the new anointing.324
