Annex 1 – Reporting by the police authorities53In May 2012, two men from Romania were each sentencedby the Gothenburg District Court to prisonterms of six years for human trafficking and aggravatedprocuring. At the same time, three more menfrom Romania were sentenced to four years sixmonths of imprisonment for aggravated procuringand one man from Romania was sentenced to imprisonmentfor three years for aggravated procuring 79 .A case of special interestA man and his wife, both from Serbia, were prosecutedin December 2011 in Gothenburg District Courtfor human trafficking for sexual purposes and forputting a person in a situation of distress after havingrecruited a 14-year-old girl from Serbia to Sweden.The intention was for her to be exploited sexually bythe couple’s 25-year-old son, and to subject her to distressthrough an enforced relationship with the son.The woman was also indicted for assault, unlawfulthreats, rape or complicity in rape or sexual coercion.The son was prosecuted for the rape of a child and thesexual exploitation of children and for rape or sexualcoercion.The prosecution was based primarily on informationconveyed by the girl during police interviews.During the trial, the girl changed her statement. Thecourt could not determine which of the girl’s pieces ofinformation were correct, and whether the girl hadchanged her story because she had been subject tothreats of reprisals. The indictment concerninghuman trafficking was dismissed for reasons thatincluded the fact that it was impossible to prove theintention behind bringing the girl to Sweden. Othercounts were also dismissed. The conviction wasappealed but the Court of Appeal confirmed the DistrictCourt’s sentence in September 2012 80 .79 Gothenburg District Court 14.05.2012, Case no. 8184-11.80 The Court of Appeal for Western Sweden 14.09.2012, Case noB 1689-12County of HallandIn 2011, the police authority in Halland initiated anintelligence project to combat human trafficking forsexual purposes and related crime. The project resultedin a Swedish man being sentenced by the DistrictCourt to imprisonment for five months for procuring.At the same time, six men were sentenced to finesbased on daily income for the purchase of sexual services,and another ten men received orders of summarypunishment for the purchase of sexual services.The victims were a 32-year-old woman from Panama,and a 40-year-old woman whom the perpetrator hadrecruited from Romania.Collaboration Area North(Counties of Västerbotten, Norrbotten, Västernorrland,Jämtland)County of VästerbottenIn 2011, three preliminary investigations concerninghuman trafficking for purposes other than sexualwere initiated. Two preliminary investigations werediscontinued by prosecutors. The third preliminaryinvestigation involved a 44-year-old man from anAsian country who was suspected of human traffickingfor forced labour, or usury and illegal threats,extortion and interference in a legal case. The manand his son were each convicted in April 2012 bySkellefteå District Court to 240 hours of communityservice 81 . The two were jointly and severally to pay tothe three injured-parties SEK 15,000 in damages.One of the preliminary investigations that was discontinuedconcerning human trafficking for otherpurposes related to a man who was suspected of havingabused functionally-impaired victims fromPoland. The man was supposed to have deprived thevictims of their identity documents and forced themto beg and sell paintings and wooden carvings. Areport concerning unlawful threats was submitted in81 Skellefteå District Court 19.04.2012, Case no. 179-12.
