Man Star Trucks&Busesproduces public transport buses. Since the turn of 2006/2007 the industry waste management has been implemented inaccordance with the Environmental Management System (EMS). The introduction of the EMS has contributed to positivechanges in waste management, both: in terms of environmental protection and the finances.Keywords: Environmental Management System (EMS), industrial waste management1. IntroductionEMS is part of the complete management system.That includes: organizational structure, planningactivities, procedures, processes and resourcesneeded to develop, implement, review and maintainenvironmental policy and the management ofenvironmental aspects.The basic task of EMS is business in the field ofenvironmental protection [1]. It helps to preventthe environmental problems by consideringenvironmental aspects in planning, design,production and maintenance. In addition, the EMSforces to introduce organizational improvements.That allows the maximize corrective actions. And, asthe consequence, to continuously reduce the negativeenvironmental impacts.Entrepreneurs accomplishing the EMS use toolsassociated with systemic approach to environmentalmanagement, such as standards ISO 14001 andEMAS.1.1. Standard ISO 14001Environmental Management System certificationaccording to ISO 14001 in many cases is used toevaluate potential business partner. The main taskof ISO 14001 is to support environmental protectionand pollution prevention in a way, which considersthe socio-economic needs. ISO 14001 containsrequirements, which can be objectively audited,but do not include requirements of environmentalactivity. ISO 14001 is intended for all organizations,regardless of the type and size, and for use in differentgeographical, cultural and social conditions [1].1.2. Eco Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS)The essence of the Eco-Management andAudit System (EMAS), the EU’s environmentalmanagement system, is looking for the possibilitiesof minimizing the impact on the environment andimproving the efficiency of these activities [2].EMAS registration [1] means that the organization hasan efficient environmental management system, whichsignificantly contributes to reduce operating costs, e.q.waste disposal. In addition, EMAS registration makesthis organization competitive on the market. Eco-Management and Audit Scheme [1] is a tool addressedto all companies and institutions, that systematicallyidentify the environmental aspects. It helps to developand implement action plans which allow progressivelyreduce their environmental impact.53
Jolanta LatosińskaThe most important is the international standardISO 14001, because it specifies a system by whichcompanies are implementing an environmentalmanagement system [4].The implementation of EMS based on therequirements of ISO 14001 is regarded as a steptowards EMAS registration. Comparison of keyfeatures and requirements of ISO 14001 and EMASare shown in Table 1.Table 1. Production capacity of this factory allows toproduce buses at the rate of 18 buses per day. Annualproduction of buses in Starachowice reached 890 in2006, and in 2007 – 956 [3].3. Environmental Management System in Man StarTrucks&Buses StarachowiceEMS was launched to implement the Man StarTrucks&Buses at the turn of 2006/2007. In termsof waste management it introduced new rulesaimed at protecting the environment. That included:segregation of waste at its origin, minimizing theeffects of the waste (e.g. gradual abandonment ofthe use of unnecessary packaging). Fulfillment of therequirements and, as a consequence, the certificationof ISO 14001 standards was achieved on 30 October2007 [3].3.1. Waste management in the Man Star Trucks&BusesStarachowiceThe amount of waste generated in Man StarTrucks&Buses depends on the number of producedbuses. The percentage of waste generated duringproduction of one bus in 2007 is shown in Figure 1.Quantities of waste generated before the introductionof EMS and in the first year of EMS operation areshown in Table 2.Fig. 1.
