To summarise differences related to participation levels,a range of observations can be made from Table 25 onthe next page.Gender: The main difference that can be seen whencomparing male and female participation levels is thatmany more men participate in team sports than women,with the exception of netball. For example:• 13.2% of men participate in soccer, compared to2.6% of women;• 3.7% of men participate in rugby, compared to0.7% of women;• 2.9% of men participate in cricket, compared to0.7% of women.Women are still more active than men in activities traditionallyassociated with females. For example:• 6.9% of women participate in walking, comparedto 3.9% of men;• 5.1% of women participate in netball, compared to0.7% of men;• 1.5% of women participate in dancing, comparedto 0.4% of men.Age: In addition to the gender differences mentionedpreviously, there are some key differences that can beseen between age groups. For example:• Young adults (age 16 to 25) appear to be muchmore active than middle-age adults and seniors inteam sports, such as soccer, netball, rugby andcricket, as well as in athletics and snooker/pool.• Middle age adults (age 26 to 59) appear to beslightly more active in home-based or gym-basedactivities, such as weight training, aerobicsand swimming.• Seniors (age 60+) appear to be more involved inlower impact activities such as walking andaquarobics, although a high percentage is alsoinvolved in martial arts and aerobics.Race: When it comes to race, the following observationscan be made:• Black and coloured residents appear to be moreactive in team sports like soccer, netball, cricketand rugby.• White, Asian and Indian residents appear moreactive in individual activities like walking, running,swimming, martial arts, cycling and aerobics,although running and walking appear popularacross all groups.SES Index: In terms of socio-economic status, the biggestdifferences can be seen in the following activities:• Upper income households appear to participatemore in aerobics/fitness, martial arts, runningand walking.• Lower income households appear to participatemore in sports like netball and soccer.There is also a notable difference on more costly activities.For example, some activities only have involvementby upper income households, such as:• Sailing;• Scuba diving;• Surfing.FIGURE 46: JIVE BIG WALK (SOURCE: SRA)However, the findings again suggest that there areother barriers besides cost. The fact that lower incomehouseholds are not as involved in activities that arefree, like running and walking, suggests that otherconstraints like safety, accessibility and working hoursmay be having an impact.RESEARCH REPORT JANUARY 201145
