viii| Environmental and social transparency under the Companies Act 2006When the review refers to ‘social’ matters, it refers to a wide range ofissues. As the review focuses on the practice of industries with high directenvironmental and social impacts, some of the most important ‘social’matters of concern relate to the treatment of local communities in areasof company operations (e.g. practices and policies of community engagement,displacement, compensation, employment etc), particularly in amultinational context. While the legal requirements draw a distinctionbetween ‘social and community issues’, this review considers ‘community’issues within the bracket of ‘social’ matters, for the purposes of straightforwardcommunication.ClientEarth’s analysis in this review does not examine in great detail thescale or specifics of the impacts and irresponsibilities worldwide whichhave been alleged against or linked to multinational extractive companiesbased in the UK. Many such studies have already been undertaken by arange of individuals and bodies in expansive detail. 4 Instead this reviewevaluates existing UK company law, and identifies steps which can betaken in the UK in order to promote transparency and accountability inrelation to these matters, and which ultimately may drive higher standardsof corporate practice.* * *
