Simon Wentworth (order #1132857) 9starting out . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .In a world where firearms are plentiful and security forcesare armed, many opponents are overly reliant on firearms andrelatively unskilled in melee combat. A skilled Close QuartersCombat specialist will turn this to her advantage. Engaging inmelee often will catch many opponents unprepared (a securityguard faced by a shadowrunner is more likely to reach for his gunthan his stunbaton), and she can leverage that into a quick anddevastating takedown.Getting PhysicalThere are numerous potential ways to approach this role, andit can be fulfilled by a variety of character builds. Typically though, both attributes and skills factor heavily into melee combat. The four Physical attributes are of the greatest importanceto this role, along with Initiative. Agility and Strength both lendto the character’s offense, and Reaction and Body to the defense.A high Initiative helps assure that the Close Quarters Combatspecialist has the jump on opponents. This approach starts with a good skill rating in theweapon(s) of choice. Any of the skills from the Close Combatskill group would be appropriate, as would Pistols or ThrowingWeapons. Investment in Dodge or Gymnastics are also priorities.Competency in skills from the Stealth (particularly Infiltration)and Firearms Skill Groups are also beneficial, for those timeswhen the target is too far to engage immediately or directly inmelee combat. The Martial Arts quality (p. 156, Arsenal) and the variousassociated maneuvers offer advantages as well.Character BuildsThere are a number of approaches to this role. Perhaps themost popular is that of the adept, particularly those that followthe Warrior’s Way. Many adept powers are particularly suited forthis role (most notably Attribute Boost, Combat Sense, CriticalStrike, Elemental Strike, Improved Ability, Improved Reflexes,Killing Hands, Mystic Armor, and Nerve Strike).Augmented characters offer great versatility with some implants—bothbio- and cyberware are imminently suited for meleecombat including multiple custom and armored cyberlimbs withhigh attribute boosts, implant weapons, and various Initiative andReaction enhancements). Melee specialist adepts can be hyperspecializedby combining magic and technological augmentation.Magicians are a less obvious option to the close-quarterscombat role. They can summon spirits and order them into meleecombat or use possession (especially with spirits of beasts andguardian spirits). Another means is by spells, especially Increase(Attribute), Increase Reflexes, and the various touch-rangeCombat spells. The mystic adept can draw from both aspects ofhis abilities in fulfilling this role.Another off-beat choice might be a technomancer combiningtheir superiority in the Matrix with that of the “meat world”using echoes such as Acceleration, Biowire, Mesh Reality, andeven Resonance Trodes.Though less common, riggers and technomancers can alsofulfill the duties of this role by using drones in melee (particularlythose with mechanical arms or fully anthroform drones).Essential GearWhen it comes to essential gear, the character should possessthe weapon(s) that corresponds to her choice of skill(s)—that is,of course, if the character isn’t an Unarmed Combat specialist anddispenses weapons. Melee weapons are effective tools in causinga lot of damage at close range and are often more controllable interms of the damage dealt. When choosing weapons, note that, while the stereotypicalClose Quarters Combat specialist benefits from possessing a highStrength, this need not be the case, and several weapons requireonly contact to do damage (poisoned blades, stun weapons, etc.).Characters should maintain a backup ranged weapon, just in case.A few weapon modifications (pp. 146–153, Arsenal) can alsoprove interesting additions.Augmentations that improve the attributes and skills spotlightedabove, such as muscle replacement, muscle augmentationand toner, bone lacing, and customized cyberlimbs, all supportthis role, not to mention the various types of implanted weaponry(from cyberspurs to shock hands). This role also benefits fromvarious forms of implanted armor and skeletal reinforcement.Additionally, any augmentation that offers additional InitiativePasses is of great help in this role. The extra Initiative Passes canbe used in active defense on the way into close range or simply tomete out more punishment.Armor, both worn and implanted, especially with a highImpact rating but that doesn’t restrict movement, is essential.Should a rigger attempt to fill this role, drones with a fullmechanical arm can be used to great effect in melee combat. In apinch, any drone can be used to ram opponents or simply hindertheir movements.Fire SupportIn the military, the term “fire support” means artillery or closeair support that is used in conjunction with ground operations, usually an assault. To shadowrunners, the term’s meaning is similar, but with a limited scope. The fire support role handles physicalengagements that are out of range of close-quarters combat.Ranged combat is a staples of the Sixth World; firearms areso accessible and cheap, that their use by criminals, security andlaw enforcement is ubiquitous. Even Joe Q. Public will often carrysome firearm for personal protection. Firefights can be lethal affairs, but, while just about anyone can be handed a pistol or rifleand told to fire at anything that moves, it takes skill and trainingto use weapons and magic to their fullest potential.Probably the most common character role, a fire supportspecialist is either a crack weapons specialist or a combat magiciancapable of both taking down enemies and suppressing opposition.DutiesThe duties of this role are three-fold. The first and most obviousduty is to eliminate threats that are out in the open at longrange. Second, to keep opponents under cover pinned until eithera close quarters combat specialist can close or another fire supportspecialist can move to a flanking position. This role is also responsiblefor “area interdiction;” keeping opponents clear of certainareas of a battlefield.10Runner’s <strong>Companion</strong>

Fire Supportspecialists are also often called upon for specialized functions, such as ranged assassinations or the use of heavy weapons againsthardened targets or vehicles.Taking the ShotMore than their attributes, Fire Support characters are highlydependent on their skills and the tools of their trade. For mundane characters (and adepts), a high Agility is fundamentalto this role, as is a good rating in the skill(s) used with thecharacter’s weapon(s) of choice. Reaction and Body attributes canalso be useful, although it is possible to make up for deficiencies inboth attributes in other ways. Though largely secondary, the highStrength of some metaypes and augmented characters may proveuseful for recoil compensation.Initiative, while important, is not the be-all and end-all ofthis role. While it is easier to neutralize threats before they can geta bead on you, it is also useful to be able to choose targets after theyhave acted in a Combat Turn. Extra Initiative Passes are highlyuseful in either case.In terms of skill set, weapon skills are crucial. Fire Supportcharacters can either hyperspecialize in one weapon or diversifyaround several. Seeing and identifying targets makes Perception avital skill for this role. Dodge or Gymnastics are also crucial, sincefinding and taking cover during a firefight combat might mean thedifference between life or death. The Heavy Weapons, Gunnery, various Exotic Weapons, and Armorer skills may also prove usefulfor mundane characters taking this role. For a character taking a magical approach to the Fire Supportrole, such as combat mages, Spellcasting and Summoning skills aredecisive, though all the Sorcery and Conjuring skills prove useful.Unlike the Awakened in other roles, Fire Support magiciansbenefit from having balanced Physical attributes too. More so thanother magical types, magicians in this role benefit significantlyfrom augmentations and implants that enhance vision and boostcombat abilities.starting out . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Character BuildsThis role can be approached in many different ways from theobvious to the esoteric. Fire Support specialists of all sorts are popular, and different approaches benefit from different advantages.Mundane and augmented characters can benefit from awide array of weapon choices and technological enhancements, both implanted and external, to fulfill this role. Appropriatelymodified and accessorized weapons are highly desireable, as arevarious types of vision enhancements and targeting aids be theyimplants or worn (smartlinks, thermographics, rangefinders, radarsense, etc). Augmented characters can expand their arsenal with aplethora of combat augmentations such as Reaction, Agility, andInitiative-boosting cyberware (and some bioware), implantedarmor, and even attention co-processors.Riggers represent an alternative mundane approach to thiscombat role; one relying heavily on armed and armored combatRunner’s <strong>Companion</strong>11
