When that information deals with thebleeding edge, there’s nothing like having a connection to a groupof researchers who constantly obsess about the issue at hand. Theirinsights are infinitely more valuable than secondhand reports, andtheir latest data is always a year or two ahead of the most recentpublications. After all, publication just sets the project team up asextraction targets.A workgroup within the Mangadyne division of ManadyneCorporation, Project Monad tightly focuses on investigating technomancersand the nature of Resonance abilities. It’s rumored thattheir ultimate goal is to develop a hitcher jack that could allowothers to fully experience a journey into the Resonance realms. However, that development is still a long ways off. In the meantime, the project concentrates on discerning the physiologicalinteractions associated with a technomancer’s biological transmitter. They’ll need to understand that before they can hook anycyberware up to it.Rusted StilettosUses: Smuggling, muscle, drugsPlaces to Meet: Bars within the Redmond BarrensSimilar Contacts: Ghostriders, Scatterbrains, Steppin’ WulfsWhen looking for information on a neighborhood, smallgangs can be one of the best resources that a shadowrunner canfind. They know everyone by sight. If someone’s involved in illegalactivity, they make sure to get their cut. If someone has hiddenresources, they probably know about it and have plans to obtainthem. They know their neighbors and can readily distinguish whois prey and who is a fellow predator. An irradiated pack of orks and trolls, the Stilettos hold territoryin the Glow City district of the Redmond Barrens in Seattle. The radiation, the drugs, and the other mindbenders have donequite a bit of damage to their physiques and their minds. However, they remain a potent and knowledgeable resource within theirneighborhood, even if a ‘runner probably wouldn’t want to ventureinto their radioactive turf to find a safe house. Of course, thatsame radiation has made these mutants some of the scariest musclein all of Seattle. Just be careful when you’re dealing with them.Psychopathic coworkers can make any job unpredictable.TerraFirst!Uses: Jobs, corporate espionage, gearPlaces to Meet: Food co-ops, Zen gardens, Matrix forumsSimilar Contacts: Awakened Liberation Front, GreenWar,Primeira VagaSome people are willing to take extreme measures for causesin which they believe. Simon Wentworth (order #1132857) 9the salvation of the environment is their cause of choice. Thosewho tamper with Mother Nature—through pollution, geneticmanipulation, or resource exploitation—must be stopped at anycost. Scientists, corporate wageslaves, ineffective politicians, oreven careless campers are all viable targets. For ‘runners who liketo feel that they’re on the side of justice, TF! membership may bethe cause they seek.TF! is organized via a cell structure, with minimal communicationbetween cells and no central leadership. This means thattheir activities may be poorly coordinated and limited in scope. It’sunlikely that members of one cell will know members of anothercell. Their crusade to stop ecological damage and their willingnessto use violence in the name of their cause unites the organization.Never underestimate their resources or the extremes to whichthey’ll go for their cause. The UnseenUses: Ares corporate rumors, magical training, espionagePlaces to Meet: NAN enclaves, Knight Errant precinct housesSimilar Contacts: Dr. Faustus Society, Lone Star Department ofMagical ResearchAs a small, secretive group of Native American shamans, theUnseen are more of a rumored organization than an establishedone. Classified corporate memos and inter-office mailings refer tothe Unseen as a special-ops group that can be utilized when magicalinfiltration and surveillance is required. The group frequentlyreceives generous funding from a number of different Ares subsidiaries. However, they are clearly not a subsidiary, nor do theyparticipate in Ares training exercises.Field reports have repeatedly shown that all members ofthis group are highly talented and trained. They have most oftenworked in conjunction with Knight Errant, though they have alsobeen involved in operations with other Ares subsidiaries. Theirultimate agenda is unknown, though it is believed that a highrankingmember of Ares’ board may be their unidentified patron.Virtual ContactsWhen AR is an ubiquitous part of life, not every contactneeds to have a physical body. The Matrix provides a vast entityfor legwork. Anyone with a commlink can perform a Data Search(p. 219, SR4) to try to identify relevant information. Instead of dependingupon a utility to perform the search, a good Matrix nodemay already have that information compiled. Of course, just as inthe meat world, a relationship with a node can save time. Nodeslike this—databases, social networks, and message boards—arevirtual contacts. The Groups as Contacts rules (p. 124) also representthese virtual contacts. There are three types of virtual contacts. General networksare those that have the general public as their membership, withno specific interest shared among members. A focused networkhas an interest that its members share, such as rigging, games, guns, movies, or politics. A specialized network has a very specifictopic, such as rigging aircraft, family board games, pistols, romantic comedies, or a specific political party. Focused networkshave roughly the same scope as a Knowledge skill, and specializednetworks are similar in scope to Knowledge skill specializations(p. 127, SR4). The gamemaster has the final word on the type ofa specific network.Runner’s CompanionThe more specific the interest of a virtual contact, the morelikely it is to offer aid or advice. Add two bonus dice to a legworktest for an appropriate focused network or four bonus dice for aspecialized network. However, a virtual contact can rarely offerassistance outside its bailiwick. Add six to the threshold of any testinvolving a focused or specialized virtual contact that is outside itsarea of expertise.Virtual Connection RatingWith regards to virtual contacts, the Connection ratingrepresents the diversity and level of expertise available. Differentnetworks may attract different members who focus on different aspectsof a hobby. While some might cater to novices, others mightattract seasoned professionals. This variation in membership servesto determine the Connection rating. Make sure to apply the modifiersfor the number of members in the network and the Matrixresources of the network from the Group Connection ModifiersTable (p. 124) when calculating the Connection rating.Loyalty RatingThe Loyalty rating of a virtual contact represents the character’sreputation within that network. Rather than describing apersonal connection, the Loyalty rating of a virtual contact is ameasure of how well well-known and well-liked the character isamong the network’s members. In all other ways, a virtual contact’sLoyalty rating acts like the Loyalty rating of a normal contact.Optional Rule:Variable Connection RatingPeople who participate in social networks join, drop out, take sabbaticals, and simply do not stayup-to-date, all without any regularity. As a result, the Connection rating of a virtual contact maybe more fluid than that of a normal contact. TheConnection rating of a virtual contact at any giventime is variable, and the gamemaster rolls it usingthe Connection rating column of the following table. If the contact was purchased with a Membershipmodifier (Groups as Contacts, p. 124), add the costof that modifier to the dice roll for the Connectionrating before dividing. If the result from the tableis 0, then the virtual contact is unable to offer anyaid to the character. The gamemaster determinesthe time between rolls, choosing to roll once foreach run, each session, or each request.Type Connection Rating CostGeneral 2D6 / 4* 1** + Loyalty ratingFocused 2D6 / 3* 2** + Loyalty ratingSpecialized 2D6 / 2* 3** + Loyalty rating*Round down**Apply modifiers for the number of membersin the network and the Matrix resources of thenetwork from the Group Connection ModifiersTable (p. 124).advanced contacts . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .129
