While these elves usually avoidcivilizations due to their high sensitivity to pollutants, some havemigrated to Latin American cities (and beyond) and abandonedtheir native natural ways.Abilities: Allergy (choose pollutant, Mild), Allergy (choose a secondpollutant, Mild), Low-Light, PhotometabolismORK METAVARIANTSOrk metavariants are quite exotic and deviate from the commonork significantly. Because of this difference, ork metavariantsrarely identify themselves with the Or’zet cultural movement thathas infused the ork metatype with a common cultural heritage.HobgoblinMetavariant Cost: 20 BPHobgoblins are stereotyped as an ill-humored and surly orkvariant, native to the Middle East. Wiry and less bulky than thecommon ork, hobgoblins possess a volatile temperament and anaggressive streak that comes to the fore when they are slighted.Abilities: Fangs, Low-Light Vision, Poor Self Control: VindictiveOgreMetavariant Cost: 20 BPOgres are a burly European variant that is best known(though inaccurately) known for their voracious appetite. Shorter, stockier, and with less body hair than the common ork, ogres areless brutish in appearance, though they share all of the remainingphysical and biological traits of the baseline species.Abilities: Low-Light Vision, Ogre StomachOniMetavariant Cost: 25 BPThis Japanese ork variant earned its name from the striking resemblanceto the demons of Japanese folklore. Oni boast vibrant skincolors, twisted horns, and protuberant eyes that make them dauntingeven when they aren’t trying to intimidate you. Under the newJapanese emperor, oni have slowly begun to shed the negative imagethat has plagued them in Japan and are finding employment as roninand bodyguards among the shadows and non-racist underworld.Abilities: Low-Light Vision, Striking Skin PigmentationSatyrMetavariant Cost: 25 BPAnother ork variant with remarkable parallels to a mythologicalcritter, the satyr is native to Greece and the Mediterraneanregion. Their odd goat-legged and horned appearance concealsmany similarities with the brawny and hardy common ork. While typically outgoing and gregarious, satyrs owe this more toMediterranean culture than genetics.Abilities: Low-Light Vision, Satyr LegsTROLL METAVARIANTSTroll metavariants are often as striking and outlandish as thebasic metatype. While the known metavariants do not posses thedermal deposits of the baseline species, each has its own distinctivefeatures that make them easily identified as troll metavariants—aside from their sheer size and impressive body mass.CyclopsMetavariant Cost: 45 BPCyclops, named after the mythic giants they resemble, sporta single great eye in the middle of their foreheads. This raresubgroup is native to Greece and the Aegean Isles. Cyclops aretypically broad shouldered and heavily built with Mediterraneanskin tones and little body hair. Some possess a single small hornabove their eye. Though the single eye can prove a handicap, cyclopsare fierce and vigorous opponents in close combat. Severalhave made names for themselves around the Mediterranean asoutstanding bodyguards and pit fighters.Abilities: Cyclopean Eye, Metagenetic Improvement (Strength),+1 ReachFomoriMetavariant Cost: 45 BPNative to the British Isles, fomori can be physically mistakenfor young common trolls due to their smaller size. Since they lackdermal deposits, they are often perceived as less daunting thantheir cousins, but, in fact, they are comparatively more robustand vigorous than they appear. Fomori are also reputed to possesssome innate resistance to magic.Abilities: Arcane Arrester, Metagenetic Improvement (Body),Thermographic Vision, +1 ReachGiantMetavariant Cost: 40 BPMore so than any other metavariant, giants have great difficultyassimilating into society thanks to their size (they are,on average, 3 meters tall). While their build is relatively slender, more humanlike, and less stout than that of normal trolls, they areeasily recognized by their leathery skin that possesses a bark-liketexture.Abilities: Dermal Alteration (Bark), Thermographic Vision,+1 ReachMinotaurMetavariant Cost: 45 BPSimilar in many respects to the legendary beast, troll minotaurshave several bull-like features such as broad noses, a shortfurry pelt, and a pair of symmetrical horns that can be used togore a foe. Their fearsome appearance is often at odds with anotherwise peaceful nature, but those minotaurs that do cash in ontheir brawn and intimidating looks find ample work as mercenaries, bouncers, bodyguards, or underworld enforcers.Abilities: Goring Horns, Metagenetic Improvement (Body),Thermographic Vision, +1 ReachRunner’s Companion
Simon Wentworth (order #1132857) 9alternative character concepts . . . . . . . . . . .CREATING ACHANGELING CHARACTERThe first step when creating a changeling character is to choosea normal metatype (human, elf, dwarf, ork, or troll), metavariant(p. 46), or, contingent on gamemaster approval, a Non-Metahumansapient. As with a regular character, this choice defines his naturalattribute minimums and maximums, as well as setting augmentedmaximums (see Building a Shadowrunner, p. 72, SR4).CHANGELING QualitIESAfter a metatype is chosen, transforming the character intoa changeling is as simple as choosing one of the 3 levels of theChangeling Positive quality (next column). This quality countstowards the character’s limit of Positive qualities (p. 77, SR4),but unlocks a number of additional Build Points to be used exclusivelyto select Positive and Negative Metagenic qualities (seeMetagenetic Qualities, p. 110).Depending on the level taken, the character must choose anumber of Positive and Negative Metagenetic qualities (p. 110),though gamemasters may chose to take on Negative Metageneticqualitiy selection to ensure balance. Metagenetic qualities chosenin this fashion do not count toward the 35 BP cap on qualities, aslong as they remain within the totals defined by the Changelingquality. If the player chooses Metagenetic qualities with a total BPvalue greater than the given thresholds, the excess cost or bonusBP count toward the character’s normal limits for qualities.Runner’s CompanionChangelingCost: 5 to 15 BPThe effects of SURGE are diverse and little understood. Some changelings suffer only minor phenotypic alterations, while others suffer full body transformations on par withgoblinization. Since the genes expressed when SURGE strikesare errant, negative effects and traits such as mental disorders, physical deformities and impairments, and intolerances are common.Characters may chose only one of the SURGE classes belowwhen this quality is taken and must add the relevant value to theirtotal BPs spent on qualities.Class I SURGE (5 BP): Class I often represents minor andcosmetic changes like altered hair, skin or eye colorations, dermaland hair texture, or metahuman traits. The character must take10 BP worth of Positive Metagenetic qualities and 5 BP worth ofNegative Metagenetic qualities.Class II SURGE (10 BP): Class II changeling traits are oftenmore pronounced. This can manifest either as multiple alterationsor as greater physical changes that have certain impact on the character’sappearance or how people respond to him. The charactermust choose 20 BP worth of Positive Metagenetic qualities and 10BP worth of Negative Metagenetic qualities.Class III SURGE (15 BP): Class III includes the mostsevere modifications. Characters with this SURGE level haveusually undergone serious and often painful transformations. The gamemaster and character should think of a certain theme73
