4.26 SINGLE PHASE ALTERNATOR(GENERATOR) -- TRUCKThe single phase alternator is mounted under thecompressor. The belt drive arrangement ensures thatwhen the diesel engine is in high speed, the alternatordelivers 240 vac 60Hz and when the diesel engine is in lowspeed the generator delivers 240 vac 50Hz.The alternator has a brushless compound excitation,using an auxiliary phase capacitor to provide the selfexcitation. The alternator has only one rotatingcomponent, no electronic controls and sealed-for-lifebearings, combining simplicity with reliability.b. Fault Finding Parts to be Checked --Without Loada. Checking Capacitor1. Unscrew top plastic cover.2. Disconnect capacitor wires. Verify that three phase power exists on supplyside and that the same voltage is present betweenterminals H4 and 46 on the phase sequence module. (SeeFigure 4-22)b. Verify that 17 to 26 vac exists between terminals4andX2onmodule.c. If 17 to 26 vac does not exist between eitherterminals 5 and X2, or 6 and X2 on the module, module isdefective and should be replaced.Figure 4-22. Periodic inspection ofhardware and bolt torque is recommended to insure theintegrity of the unidrive.NOTEThread locking sealant, 5/16 flat washer and 5/16lock washer must be used on bolts between thecompressor mounting flange and the adapterspacers. The recommended sealant is Loctitescrew lock no. 262.Figure 4-23 shows the torque value, size and grade ofhardware to be used when reassembling the unidriveassembly.62-028844-24
