2.1 LENSESThe AATON 35-III’s flexible lens mounting system allows for the use ofa wide variety of 35mm lenses.Flange focal distance.Refers to the critical distancefrom the lens seat to the filmplane. With the PL port, theprecise FFD of the AATON35-III is 52mm -40 to -50microns as measured with adepth gauge in the lens port.With the PV port, the FFD is57.15mm -60 to -70 micronsIt is recommended that thesetolerances be checked andmaintained by a qualified technician.The combination ofFFD and back focus distanceof a lens directly affects precisefocus and overall image sharpness.Make sure these criticalmeasurements are strictlyupheld. When using an unfamiliarlens for the first time,check that the eye focusmatches the tape-measuredfocus marks on the lens, and/orshoot a focus test.2.1.1 ArriPL Lens PortThe ArriPL lens port is the standard mounting system deliveredwith the AATON 35-III and allows the use of all 35mm ArriPLmounted motion picture lenses. PL lenses adaptors are available forArri standard and Arri bayonet mounted lenses. This lens port isideal for rental facilities, where a mounting system compatible withother manufacturer’s 35mm cameras is often desired.If you need to get a Panavision or Nikon mount, please contact acertified Aaton technician.2.1.2 Installing the LensTo install the lens on the camera body, turn the outer locking ringcounter-clockwise. If the port cap is on, remove it. Align the fourprotruding flanges on the lens with the four corresponding cutawaysin the locking ring and insert the lens into the camera port so thatits flanges rest evenly against the lens seat. Tighten the locking ringby turning clockwise until the lens is secured in place and the lockingring is firmly set. Make sure the locking ring is tight enough sothat it cannot be inadvertantly unlocked.VIEWING SYSTEM2.2.1 Viewfinder OptionsThe viewfinder is designed to be fully orientable, providing left orright side viewing and upright image in any position. The viewfindercomes equipped with a standard short eyepiece that can be usedfor handheld and tripod-mounted operation. For more comfortabletripod and studio applications, the standard extension finder(200mm) can be fitted in place of the short eyepiece. With an Elemak or20
THE CAMERA BODYMitchell type dolly, or in situations requiring additional reach, thehyperlong (400 mm) finder, which is twice as long as the standardextension finder, can be used.The Aaton hyperlong finder integrates as a standard feature a heatingsystem designed to fight mist. A heating system kit is also availablefor the standard eyepiece.2.2.2 Attaching the Extension FinderIn order to use an extension finder on the AATON 35-III, the standardeyepiece must first be removed To remove the eyepiece, locatethe eyepiece lock ring, marked a in the image below. Rotate counterclockwiseuntil the ring reaches its stop and gently pull off the eyepiece.To install the extension finder, locate the protruding guideThe Pechan PrismIn order to provide a fullyorientable upright image, theAaton viewfinder incorporatesa Pechan prism assembly, whichis actually comprised of twotriangular prisms sandwichedtogether. On some viewfinders,depending of the constructionof this prism, rotation of theeyepiece a full 360°will causethe image in the finder to shiftslightly left or right.After attaching an extensionfinder, if the image in the finderappears to have shiftedslightly, rotate the finder 360°and choose the preferred centeredimage.dcba21
