rnished evidence that 0.13. Type I cable can be kept
stOrage equally as well as in ,,'et storage. \ \'hile in
stOrage. cable should be protected from sunlight and
e reels of test cable are unique in that their \'alues of
tion resistance are higher at the end of the test period
they were at the beginning of the test. These results
been confirmed bv the manufacturer who was unable
ke any prediction~ on the basis of chemical and electriests
made this vear. as to which reels of cable had been
in a com'entional manner and which had been stored
IIof the cable under test had been rereeled periodically,
a reverse bend, with the expectation that such hang
would cause faults and cracks to show up early in the
. It now seems reasonable to suppose that the re\'crsal
echanical stresses prevented the insulation from acquira
"set." Further tests will be required to ascertain the
rlance of cable reeling in the long-time storage of subrine
mine cable.
Care of R/lbber Covered Field Cables.
Recommendations have been made For the issuance of
the attention of the Board that the rubber latex that is now
used for the conductor insulation on these field cables. wilL
after exposure to sunlight and weather. become hard and
sun-cracked. This hardening and checking is an undesirable
characteristic of rubber when used in exposed places.
A remedy that can be suggested in using the present cable
and cable stubs is to protect the exposed rubber latex insulation
on the wires by taping the individual exposed wires
with friction tape. This taping will protect the latex from
sunlight and prolong the life of the insulation.
It is desired to point out that the majority of subjects
handled bv the Board are classified and that inFormation
pertaining'to them cannot be published in the JOURXAL.
The following tabulation shows the number of projects
and subjects which were handled by the Board during July
and August:
Number on hand 1 July 51
Received during July and August 100
Undeveloped film sent by all service personnel overseas to the
United States should be wrapped in a separate package and distinctly
marked "UNDEVELOPED FILl"l" on the outside wrapper.
Packages shipped from overseas are examined by an inspectroscope,
an X-ray-like machine, installed a.t various Ports of Entry to detect
the shipment of stolen Government property.
The rays of the inspectroscope ruin undeveloped film. iVlan)' rolls
of film have been damaged because personnel have not followed
previous instructions. Any effort to label packages "U ndeveloped
Film" which contain contraband items will be easilv detected and offenders
will subject themselves to possible court-m;rtial proceedings-.
Thousands of dollars worth of stolen Government property is
being recovered each week by the use of the inspectfoscope.
