£RSIAN GULF COJ\li\IAND. By Joel Sayre. New York:
Random House, 1945. 140 Pages; Illustrated. $2.00 .
BOOK REVIEWS
. Iran is hot; not hot like a \Vashington summer, nor like the
(21ifomia desert, but so hot that the heat kills the Hies in July.
~\ temperature of 189 has been recorded, and 120 in the shade
common. Add to this heat the fact that the country's only
l1Iilroadwas little more than a streak of soft iron, that the road
~stem was reminiscent of a General J\lotors testing track, and
~ .at the natives had little idea of things mechanical. l\lud in
Prtain seasons, Hies, stran.ge diseases, strange religious customs,
d mountainous territory were a few more complications.
With all these works of man and Nature to contend with,
lthePersion Gulf Command forwarded untold tons of vital war
100ateriaisto the Russians-war materials which had much to do
\withthe turn in the tide of the Russians' part of the war. The
.\meriCansbuilt their own roads, docks, and plants; they patched
and fixed and restocked the railroad; they assembled a truck
/ (.relY five minutes with native labor; and they got the tonnage
Ithrough. There was no enemy to fight, but there was the heat
and the boredo,m. Four and one-half million long tons of supplieswent
to Russia through Iran-Americans did it.
• Joel Sayre tells how they did it, in New Yorker style, which
Imakesit very ~ood reading indeed.
KEEP 'EM ROLLING: A DRIVER'SHANDBOOK. By Richard
Gordon McCloskey. \Vashington: Infantry Journal, 1945 .
270 Pages; Illustrated; Index. 50~.
~
This new and enlarged edition of the now-familiar Keep
'Em Rolling is the sixth to come from the presses. The author,
who wrote the first editions when he was editor of Army
.\fotors, is an expert at putting over instruction in the form
of colloquial, everyday language.
Ducks, motorcycles, camouHage, the care and feeding of
winches, and other related subjects are added to the expected
Iinformation on driving and first-echelon maintenance.
The reviewer, who has been driving for twenty years, didn't
I realize how little he knew about modern vehicles and their
operation and maintenance until he read this new edition.
Every driver, mechanic, motor sergeant, and motor transport
~officershould have his personal copy of this breezy book.
