52ImplementationphaseVCA dayAfter all the planning, training, practice and preparation, you arefinally ready to implement the VCA in the community. Thisshould be an exciting day – a day that will have implications onthe way in which the National Society and specific branches workwith communities to reduce vulnerabilities in a direct manner.It is the beginning of real community work.In fact, you have already undertaken a VCA. You can use thesame checklist prepared for the field test – although you may havemodified it according to suggestions made at the debriefingexercise.Useful Tips Last minute suggestionsJust in case you think you may need it, here is an additional checklistto make sure everything is ready and everybody is prepared:■ Good preparation is a “must”.■ Make sure everybody knows how the day will unfold and whatwill happen.■ Be flexible – expect the unexpected and be ready to deal withit creatively.■ Make sure you have a complete list of required resources andsufficient funds to get everything ready on time.■ VCA team members need to be prepared for every activity andfamiliar with every tools.■ Ensure appropriate timing for activities (not too intense) withscheduled breaks in between the activities.■ Be familiar with the composition of the communities beforeimplementing the VCA.■ Have all background data ready (assessment tools, secondarydata, etc.).
How to do a VCA 53■ Ask for help well in advance if you need it. Support is alwaysavailable from the International Federation’s delegations andfrom sister National Societies.■ Ensure that all the relevant information is shared andexplained to community leaders, who should represent asmany groups in the community as possible.■ Ensure that facilitators and team members remain humble andtreat people with respect and information is conveyed in amanner that everybody understands. Use visual techniques forpeople who cannot read or write.■ Ensure adequate facilities for carrying out the VCA.■ Plan for follow-up, monitoring and evaluation in order toensure permanent commitment from and to the community.Use community members to help with this task.■ Understand and respect the culture and customs of the communities.■ Think about working with children in the community. Butdo not forget that you must get prior consent from theirfamilies and follow the protocol identified in the VCAtoolbox.What you are going to do now is simply putting all the learningsinto practice.
