WIPO Award for Innovative EnterprisesThe only such castlein Poland!Presented by EWA GOŁĘBIOWSKA,Director of the Castle in CieszynThere is a place on the map of Poland where youcan find the oldest historic monuments and the latestdesign.In a small town of Cieszyn that is dividedby the Polish-Czech border it has been possiblesince 2005 to visit the Silesian Castleof Art and Enterprise, currently know as Castlein Cieszyn.Designers and journalists have found this Castlethe most interesting institution promoting designin Poland. It was established and currently developswith the support of town and the SilesiaVoivodeship authorities. Moreover, the significantrole in its development is played by the EU funds,as well as the stubbornness of stakeholdersand consistency of undertaken actions.The Castle implements wide scope of activities,starting from promoting design and supportingthe development of innovative enterprises and endingat the protection of disappearing professions.Therefore, it attracts numerous visitors who canfind here something interesting at every seasonof the year.All year long design...The symbolic annual celebration of the Castle’s‘birthday’ provides an occasion to spend a winterweekend in Cieszyn where you can meet Polishdesigners and see their latest projects. Springis a season of ‘Women Design’ which is perverselyblooming around the Women’s Day. In addition, itis worth following successive editions of the SilesianIcon competition which is presenting the mostinteresting examples of Silesian implementationof industrial and graphic design.Moreover, it is interesting to observe the plansregarding design and the transformation of Silesiafrom the region of heavy industry and hard workinto area of creative industries. Hence, thereis a genuine reason for ascribing a motto of ‘positiveenergy’ to this transformation. Such enthusiasmand consistency of actions contributed to turningof the first castle exhibition devoted to ‘Designin Public Space’ into a social movement integratingcitizens and local self-government authoritieswith architects, town-planners and designers. Themost interesting exhibits of successive exhibitionscan be admired at the Castle for the whole yearand the new seminars and workshops attract growingnumber of more and more aware participantsfrom the whole country.Not only exhibitionsAlthough we are proud that the Castle is perceivedas ‘the best place to watch design in Poland’we want to reiterate: the Castle cannot be associatedonly with exhibitions!This historic fortress helps to change the realityand to create the future of businesses and designers,provides access to the latest knowledgeand good practices, offers consultancy, advicebased on experience and contact details of variousentities. We assist companies with findingdesigners and co-operators and with entering intonew markets. Moreover, we organise professionalworkshops addressed at companies and designers,especially those implementing new productsand services and we designate participants to internationalworkshops and conferences. Our EntrepreneursClub helps the local firms to develop.Our workshops and seminars are more and moreoften attended by representatives of public administrationand local self-government authorities whoare encouraged to use the ‘design thinking’ methodwhile designing the public services.We are proud of international workshops and exhibitions,especially those devoted to typography.You are invited the whole year longIn addition, we managed to organise exhibitionsand workshops held by masters of Swiss schoolof design. Cieszyn is also more and more oftenvisited by professors from American Universitieswho eagerly share their knowledge with us.While visiting the Castle it is worth steppingby a reading room of the Michał Ozmin Designfor All Institute containing the archive of the Designfor All Europe (EIDD) and impressive collectionof books and magazines about design.Don’t be scared of dreams...or writing projectsThe current form of the Castle is the result of courageapplied not only while dreaming but also whilepragmatically making that dreams come true.As a Director of the Castle I need to daydreambut at the same time keep both my feet firmlyon the ground. Due to the fact that in secondaryschool I attended a class with the focus on mathematicsand physics and afterwards I obtaineda degree in Polish philology I am good at bothcounting and achieving support for my visions.Therefore, the Castle is also considered a modelinstitution within the sphere of the useof EU funds.Such use started from the investment co-financedfrom Phare programme and enabling the renovationof a part of the Castle and building fromscratch the so called ‘Orangery’ used usuallyby entrepreneurs. Later the EU funds facilitatedTill 31 March:‘The best diploma projects’ – annual exhibition of the most interesting projects from faculties ofdesign, enriched by the exhibits from Czech Republic and Slovakia.‘The Spirit of Poland’ – an exhibition of the Polish design teams presenting their projects atTokyo Designers Week 2010.From 14 February till 13 March: ‘Women Design. Heavyweight’.From 23 March till 25 April: ‘Academy of the Sounds of the Earth’ – presentation of the researchproject from the Institute of Art, Silesian University.From 13 April till 22 May: ‘Let it weave’ – exhibition of photographs on wicker industry in Poland.On 29 May: a Children’s Day at the Castle.From 6 June till 31 July: ‘Silesian Thing 2010’ – exhibition of laureates of the competition for thebest implementation of design in Silesia.16-18 September: ‘Treasures from a Painted Cieszyn Chest’ – unique meeting of modern art anddesign with folklore and tradition.From 12 October till 4 December: ‘Design in Public Space’.
