ASSAfASSAf’s Short Bio of Members■ Quarraisha Abdool Karim is Professor and Head ofthe Women and AIDS Programme at the Centre for theAIDS Programme of Research in South Africa, CAPRISA,University of Kwazulu-Natal. She has been Director: HIV-AIDS in the Department of Health, and Scientific Director,HIV-NET at the Medical Research Council.■ Salim S. Abdool Karim is Professor and Pro Vice-Chancellor(Research) at the University of KwaZulu-Natal inDurban. He is also Professor in Clinical Epidemiologyat the Mailman School of Public Health at ColombiaUniversity and Adjunct Professor in Medicine at the WeillMedical College of Cornell University.■ Rob Adam is Chief Executive Officer of the NuclearEnergy Corporation of South Africa (NECSA). He wasthe Director-General in the Department of Science andTechnology (DST).■ Ralph D. Adendorff is Professor in the Department ofEnglish Language and Linguistics at Rhodes University.He was Associate Professor and Director of the LinguisticsProgramme at the University of Natal.■ Jimi Olalekan Tosin Adesina is Professor of Sociologyat Rhodes University. He directed the UN Research Institutefor Social Development’s Africa Regional researchproject on Social Policy.■ Miriam Adhikari is Professor and Head, Paediatrics atthe Nelson Mandela School of Medicine, at the Universityof KwaZulu-Natal.■ Mark Alexander is Professor of Civil Engineering at theUniversity of Cape Town, and specialises in municipalengineering.■ Erna Alant is Professor, Centre for Augmentative andAlternative Communication. She has been involved in thefield of disability as training research and activist for therights of people with severe disabilities.■ Reinhard Richard Arndt was President of the Foundationfor Research Development, now incorporated intothe NRF. He established RAU’s chemistry department andwas also professor of organic chemistry at the Universityof Stellenbosch.■ Lewis David Ashwal is Professor of Petrology andDirector of the African Lithosphere Research Group at theUniversity of the Witwatersrand, School of Geosciences.■ Ahmed A. Azad was Director of Research in the HealthSciences Faculty, University of Cape Town. He was SeniorScientist at the CSIRO in Melbourne, Australia.■ Saleem Badat is Professor and Vice-Chancellor atRhodes University. Previously, he was the CEO of theCouncil on Higher Education.■ Yunus Ballim is Professor and Deputy Vice Chancellor:Academic at the University of Witwatersrand.■ Jacek Banasiak is Professor and Head of the Schoolof Mathematical Sciences at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. He was the Vice-President of the South AfricanMathematical Society.■ Eric Bateman is Professor of Respiratory Medicineand Clinical Director of the Department of Critical Care,University of Cape Town and Groote Schuur Hospital,Founder and Director of UCT Lung Institute.■ Ahmed Cassim Bawa is Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research,Knowledge Production and Partnerships) at theUniversity of KwaZulu-Natal.
