ASSAfMulti-year Strategic Plan<strong>Science</strong> based advice for the nationDevelopment Initiative (ASADI)and the Network <strong>of</strong> <strong>Africa</strong>n <strong>Science</strong>Academies (NASAC) will be anactive driver <strong>of</strong> continental effortsto exploit the unique potential<strong>of</strong> national science academiesto help in <strong>Africa</strong>’s economicand social development.well-resourced, and effective in reaching their stated goals. ASSAf through the <strong>Africa</strong>n <strong>Science</strong> <strong>Academy</strong>Development Initiative (ASADI) and the Network <strong>of</strong> <strong>Africa</strong>n <strong>Science</strong> Academies (NASAC) will be anactive driver <strong>of</strong> continental efforts to exploit the unique potential <strong>of</strong> national science academies to help in<strong>Africa</strong>’s economic and social development.ASSAf will have succeeded in making the <strong>South</strong> <strong>Africa</strong>n Journal <strong>of</strong> <strong>Science</strong> into <strong>Africa</strong>’s highestimpact research journal, <strong>of</strong>fering worldwide open access to full-text at all times, and Quest – <strong>Science</strong>for <strong>South</strong> <strong>Africa</strong> will be a science magazine with national impact in the domains <strong>of</strong> school education,public understanding <strong>of</strong> science, and science literacy. ASSAf will also have secured an established andrespected role in promoting research publishing in <strong>South</strong> <strong>Africa</strong> through the implementation <strong>of</strong> therecommendations <strong>of</strong> its 2006 <strong>Report</strong>.The <strong>Academy</strong> will have obtained endowment funds from a number <strong>of</strong> private individuals andcompanies, here and abroad, and will have achieved sustainability <strong>of</strong> resourcing through a mix <strong>of</strong>funding streams, including bequests, donations, sponsorships and reputation-based commissions.ASSAf will communicate regularly and effectively with the scholarly community, government, thegeneral public, and international partners, in ways that ensure serious consideration <strong>of</strong> what is being saidand why it is important that it be noted and acted upon, in everybody’s interest.86 Promoting Excellence in <strong>Science</strong> for Society
