ASSAfProgramme 3The Academy is committedto providing advice to thegovernment and the nation on keyissues requiring scientific enquiryand analysis. Other government orstate-appointed bodies also havewell-defined roles in this domain.However, the efforts of these bodieshave failed to date to resolvethe controversial and publiclyconfusing situation in respect ofthe role of nutritional factors inenhancing or impairing immunityand thereby affecting morbidityand mortality from pandemicdiseases such as tuberculosis andHIV infection leading to AIDS.Why the need for the project and the link to the Academy? The Academy is committed to providingadvice to the government and the nation on key issues requiring scientific enquiry and analysis. Othergovernment or state-appointed bodies also have well-defined roles in this domain. However, theefforts of these bodies have failed to date to resolve the controversial and publicly confusing situationin respect of the role of nutritional factors in enhancing or impairing immunity and thereby affectingmorbidity and mortality from pandemic diseases such as tuberculosis and HIV infection leading toAIDS. It was accordingly considered that, in the national interest, South Africa’s independent nationalscience academy, ASSAf, had a responsibility to provide much-needed authoritative advice in respectof the proposed topic. Professors Wieland Gevers (MASSAf) and James Volmink (MASSAf) proposedthe topic and were appointed interim co-chairs of a small group also comprising Professors HesterVorster (MASSAf) and Barry Mendelow (MASSAf), who were tasked to make recommendations for themembership of the Study Panel to be appointed by the Council. The group was temporarily assisted byDr Liesl Grobler.Appointment of the Study Panel Members: The Interim Co-chairs conferred with each other anumber of times, and strenuous efforts were made to assemble all the necessary bio-data and otherinformation to constitute a Study Panel along the lines of the approved Guidelines. They sought toprovide a balance betweenexpertise in human immunology and infectious diseases;human nutrition, and within that, macronutrients and micronutrients;evidence-based approaches to human interventional and other types of studies;long experience and “current thinking”;gender group and population group perspectives;deep involvement in the topic and the ability to bring fresh thinking from outside;national and international, including African continental, contributions;larger size of the Panel and a smaller, possibly more efficient model; etc.38 Promoting Excellence in Science for Society
