ASSAfProgramme 3Key performanceindicators for Programme 3ASSAf’s international activities have expandeddramatically in the last year, linked to internal growthand the development of its capacity to functionas South Africa’s national science academy in thefullest sense. The partnership with the US NationalAcademies in conjunction with the Network of AfricanScience Academies (NASAC) has allowed the Academyto initiate a major consensus study on nutritionand human immunity, to establish a Committeeon Science for the Alleviation of Poverty, and toconvene an outstandingly successful international“double symposium” on evidence-based advice.ASSAf is participating in various programmes of theInterAcademy Panel (IAP), is awarding a Young ScientistPrize in conjunction with the Academy of Science forthe Developing World (TWAS), and has been able tosecure the election of one of its members as the cochairof the InterAcademy Medical Panel (IAMP).(the total Grant-in-Aid for 2006-7 is ZAR 3 million).ASSAf has had support from the Andrew W Mellon Foundation (as a personal three-year operatinggrant of USD 75 000 to the then President, Prof Wieland Gevers (MASSAf) over the period 2003-6), theFord Foundation (USD 20 000 over 18 months for a study on the molecular life and health sciences inSouth Africa), and the IAP (USD 11 000 to support the workshop on science education described in8.1 above). ASSAf members (currently 261) pay a compulsory annual subscription of ZAR 200. Interestaccruing on unspent funds held by the Academy is attributed to projects where this is a set requirement,or it is accumulated and accountably used as operational funds at the direction of the Council. The draft Strategic Plan now under development makes provision for a greatly enhanced fundraisingdrive by ASSAf over the next two years. It is expected that studies to be commissioned by governmentdepartments or other agencies will generally be funded in full by the commissioning body concerned.62 Promoting Excellence in Science for Society
