Systems Engin<strong>ee</strong>ring <strong>Capability</strong><strong>Model</strong>• Systems Engin<strong>ee</strong>ring– INCOSE defines systems engin<strong>ee</strong>ring as "an interdisciplinary approachand means to enable the realization of successful systems.“• In August 1995, the Enterprise Process ImprovementCollaboration (EPIC), a group of industry, academic, andgovernment organizations, released the Systems Engin<strong>ee</strong>ring<strong>Capability</strong> <strong>Maturity</strong> <strong>Model</strong> (SE-CMM).– EPIC enlisted the SEI and architect Roger Bate to lead thedevelopment.– The team pulled its systems engin<strong>ee</strong>ring expertise primarily fromaerospace and defense industry corporations and from the SoftwareProductivity Consortium.– The result was a model based on the appraisal model architecturecontained in draft versions of ISO/IEC 15504 that addressedengin<strong>ee</strong>ring, project, process, and organization practices.37Systems Engin<strong>ee</strong>ring <strong>Capability</strong><strong>Model</strong>• Around the same time that the SE-CMM wasunder development, INCOSE created a checklistfor evaluating the capabilities of systemsengin<strong>ee</strong>ring organizations based on variousengin<strong>ee</strong>ring standards.– Over time, this checklist evolved into a full-blowncapability model known as the Systems Engin<strong>ee</strong>ring<strong>Capability</strong> Assessment <strong>Model</strong> (SECAM).– SECAM extended the SPICE concepts of acontinuous model but focused more specifically onsystems engin<strong>ee</strong>ring practices than the SE-CMM,using ANSI/EIA 632, "Processes for Engin<strong>ee</strong>ring aSystem," as the fundamental reference.3819
