Lateral Violence WorkshopStó:lō <strong>Nation</strong> is an advocate for a violence-free working environment. This was the mainobjective for conducting a series of workshops on lateral violence specifically for itsemp<strong>lo</strong>yees. The workshops started in February <strong>2012</strong> and the remaining workshop schedulesare expected to be completed by August <strong>2012</strong>.Stó:lō <strong>Nation</strong> Staff were engaged in a series oftraining seminars designed to assist andempower them in their work.The training objective was to enhance staff’sunderstanding of what lateral violence is, whereit comes from and how it can be addressed inthe work place as well as in the communitiesbeing served. Stó:lō <strong>Nation</strong> plans toincorporate a Lateral Violence Policy, inkeepingwith Healthy Working EnvironmentEmp<strong>lo</strong>yment Standards.The training series likewise established afoundation for understanding how currentcommunity standards have come to benormalized and accepted. The premise focusedLateral Violence Workshop1. Seminar: Retracing the Historical Impacts -(What"community standards" used to be, the impacts ofco<strong>lo</strong>nization/assimilation)2. Seminar: Understanding Trauma -(Examining therelevance of history - what the “communitystandards” are now – current impacts - how traumaaffects frontline workers)3. Seminar: Lateral Violence – Dealing with difficultpeople- (Understanding and addressing lateralviolence – conflict resolution skills)4. Seminar: Maintaining our Sanity – Selfcare/stressmanagement -(Balancing the impacts ofthe work while maintaining our health and wellness)Page 8 of 64
