School of Humanities and Social ScienceDivision of Social ScienceUrban Renewal and Redevelopment in Hong Kong: Discussion onFuture Farmland Utilization in the New TerritoriesAdvisor : CHEN Yun Chung / SOSCStudent : ZHANG Shichen / ECOF(UROP1100, Spring 2011)Like many metropolitans, Hong Kong has carried out a series of urban renewal projects. Thefarmland area in Hong Kong has been decreasing year by year. In 2010, some villages in theNew Territories received notice of removal due to the construction of high-speed railway. Thismeans more farmland will be transformed to other use, and peasants have to make theirlivelihood on a new piece of land. In the context of urban development, we investigatequestions such as: what is the prospective of agricultural factors in metropolitans like HongKong? What would be the future utilization of existing farmland?China/Africa Links ProjectAdvisor : SAUTMAN Barry V / SOSCStudent : BAO Jin / ECON(UROP1100, 1200 & 1300,Fall 2010 , Spring 2011 & Summer 2011)This project was first started in fall 2010 and ended in summer 2011. We first search for blogsand articles with news related to China and Africa and find as many news sources as possiblein print and on the internet. Then, the news articles are summarized in a database and thecontent is categorized to look for patterns in how newspapers illustrate the China/Africaissues. The next step is to look at the bigger picture about China/Africa relationship and thesystematic failure existing in the world economy and how to interpret Africa’s currentsituation. In the last semester, we study the grass-root interactions between Chinese andAfricans and the interaction between State-owned Enterprises (SOE), private corporations andthe state over the years in terms of policy, funding and other support.76
