In addition to tutoring, mentoring, financial<strong>and</strong> academic counseling, instruction is offered for student skill reinforcement. Limitedfinancial aid is available for freshmen <strong>and</strong> sophomores. Scholarships, capitalproject funding, endowments <strong>and</strong> campaign initiatives are secured through gifts fromalumni, Trustees, individuals, businesses <strong>and</strong> foundations. Individuals <strong>and</strong> groups wishing tosolicit funds in the name of BCU must coordinate these with <strong>University</strong> Relations.WRITING CENTERBishop Mueller Library, 712-279-5449The <strong>Briar</strong> <strong>Cliff</strong> <strong>University</strong> Writing Center, located in the Bishop Mueller Library, is a place forall students to strengthen their academic development by building competency in thewriting process. The Writing Center is a place for students to engage <strong>and</strong> collaborate withtheir peers, to learn to diagnose error patterns in their writing, <strong>and</strong> to develop the skills towrite effectively in their personal <strong>and</strong> professional lives <strong>and</strong> within their own academicdisciplines. Our mission in the Writing Center is to support <strong>Briar</strong> <strong>Cliff</strong>’s community of writersby empowering those we serve to think critically <strong>and</strong> to write articulately as a part of anongoing process of self-awareness <strong>and</strong> self-expression. The Writing Center offers one-ononementoring, workshops, <strong>and</strong> various computer-based tutorials. A multi-million dollarcomplex, the YMCA offers BCU students opportunities for swimming, weight lifting, a widevariety of exercise equipment, fitness classes, a gymnasium, among many others.
