Safety & Security<strong>Briar</strong> <strong>Cliff</strong> <strong>University</strong> makes the safety <strong>and</strong> security of all its campus members <strong>and</strong> guests aninstitutional priority. Even though the campus is not closed to others, it remains privateproperty for use by the <strong>University</strong> community <strong>and</strong> invited guests. The <strong>Briar</strong> <strong>Cliff</strong> <strong>University</strong>security staff protects campus <strong>and</strong> its students, faculty, <strong>and</strong> staff. When appropriate, the<strong>University</strong> issues warnings to the campus community of potential emergencies.AUTHORITY OF CAMPUS SECURITY OFFICEThe <strong>Briar</strong> <strong>Cliff</strong> campus is monitored 24 hours a day. <strong>Campus</strong> Security staff strive to providea safe campus by locking buildings, monitoring suspicious activity, enforcing parkingregulations, <strong>and</strong> reporting emergencies to local authorities. Security staff may detainindividuals for questioning. They have direct communication with local police <strong>and</strong> may callfor assistance when needed.REASONABLE SECURITYThe concept of “reasonable security” recognizes that there must be a balance between anaccessible academic setting <strong>and</strong> a completely secure campus. We, as community members,must also do our part to maintain a safe <strong>and</strong> secure yet friendly campus environment.<strong>Campus</strong> Security is a resource for all of campus in helping maintain that environment.LOCKING CAMPUS FACILITIESTo protect campus facilities, a specified locking schedule is followed. Students entering orleaving campus facilities after lock-up hours must secure the doors. Students may not propopen or alter a door so that it cannot lock. Students doing so will be subject to disciplinaryaction. Students should not admit unknown persons into locked buildings. Broken locks orpropped doors should be reported immediately to <strong>Campus</strong> Security.REPORTING CRIMES AND OTHER EMERGENCIESStudents are encouraged to report suspected criminal activity <strong>and</strong> other emergencies to the<strong>Campus</strong> Security Office or the Residence <strong>Life</strong> staff. Whether you are a victim or anobserver; any crime, suspicious activity or campus emergency should be reportedimmediately <strong>and</strong> the following procedures should be followed:IN CASE OF EMERGENCYCall 911. If calling from a campus phone, call 9-911. Identify yourself, the type, <strong>and</strong>location of the emergency.Call <strong>Campus</strong> Security on the cell phone at 9-898-1888 or 712-279-5430. From acampus phone, call ext. 5430.All incidents will be h<strong>and</strong>led seriously <strong>and</strong> be thoroughly investigated. When necessary, locallaw enforcement will be informed <strong>and</strong> their assistance requested. Security personnel willassist emergency vehicles in locating the emergency <strong>and</strong> aid in crowd control. Informsecurity with information on type <strong>and</strong> location of the emergency.TORNADO WARNING PROCEDUREIn the event of a tornado warning, report immediately to one of the following tornadoshelters. Review maps for your area to have knowledge of your closest shelter. The underground tunnels between Alverno <strong>and</strong> Heelan Hall, or between NorthHall <strong>and</strong> Heelan Hall. The hallway on the ground floor of Noonan Hall.14
