that they have engaged in study or preparatory work likely to enable better performance onthe assessment instrument.STUDY SKILLS REQUIREMENTFirst year students with a composite ACT score below 20 or below 950 on the SAT arerequired to take the Study Strategies course during the first semester. First year studentswith a reading score below 18 on the reading portion of the ACT or below 440 on the SATverbal section are required to take the Reading Dynamics course during the first semester.TUTORINGTutoring, especially in group settings, promotes active learning, peer interaction, <strong>and</strong> goodstudy habits. Tutors assist students with course work <strong>and</strong> test preparation. Tutoring isavailable for students desiring to improve their grades <strong>and</strong> underst<strong>and</strong>ing of course content,as well as those experiencing academic difficulties. Students attending classes that meet onthe <strong>Briar</strong> <strong>Cliff</strong> campus during the spring <strong>and</strong> fall semesters can request assistance for 100-<strong>and</strong> 200-level courses of two or more credit hours. Students may sign up for tutoringsessions in the Student Support Services office, HH 057, from the first day of the semesterthrough the eleventh week of classes. There is no charge for tutoring. Students signing upfor tutoring must commit to:1. Attending weekly sessions. Students who skip two or more sessions withoutnotifying the tutor can be dismissed from the program for the semester.2. Contacting the tutor (or the coordinator if the tutor cannot be reached) well inadvance if they must be absent.3. Providing the tutor with a copy of the class syllabus.4. Bringing relevant materials (class notes, texts, written assignments, homework)with them to the tutorial.5. Letting the tutor know if projects they work on together will be turned in for agrade.56
