Little is known about past or present wildlife in the area, although enquiries of Government agenciesand interested organisations indicate that the area does not appear to contain any known threatenedspecies. It is now recognised that within the metropolitan area, coastal habitats are rapidly diminishing andthere are good reasons to conserve representative examples in sufficiently large areas to ensureviability of their fauna and flora.Several species of sea birds, including gulls, terns and cormorants, use the shore and offshore islandsas resting and/or breeding sites. Sea-lions are sometimes seen basking in the sun also. Some speciesof migratory birds are protected under international treaties signed by the CommonwealthGovernment. These treaties include: Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species(CITES); Japan-Australia Migratory Birds Agreement (JAMBA); and China-Australia MigratoryBirds Agreement (CAMBA).ActionLiaise with adjacent land managers to ensure remnant coastal biota are protected andmanaged in a manner complementary to Marine Park management.34
