19.2 COLLECTINGAbaloneSeasonal abalone fishing by amateurs is determined by the Fisheries <strong>Department</strong> in consultation withCALM. The history <strong>of</strong> abalone collecting from onshore reefs in the <strong>Park</strong> shows suspended and earlyclosures <strong>of</strong> seasons, commercial fishing concerns, community tension, unsafe practices and mediainterest. Recent seasons have been restricted and some have been closed completely. Educationalprograms have been developed to aid <strong>management</strong>.Live SpecimensCollection <strong>of</strong> live animals from the <strong>Park</strong>, particularly molluscs and aquarium fish, is believed to havea dramatic impact, detracting from the <strong>Park</strong>'s recreational and educational experiences. All species <strong>of</strong>molluscs occurring in the <strong>Park</strong> can be found outside the <strong>Park</strong> boundaries. Some species arevulnerable to exploitation beyond their natural capacity to sustain viable populations and are in need<strong>of</strong> protection.Actions1. Ensure that abalone stocks and the impacts <strong>of</strong> collecting are monitored to ensuresustainability.2. Ensure that appropriate <strong>management</strong> strategies, enforcement and educationcapabilities are assessed annually prior to consideration <strong>of</strong> declaration <strong>of</strong> theseason.3. Determine the restrictions and limitations <strong>of</strong> abalone harvesting within the <strong>Park</strong> onan annual basis and after consultation between CALM and the Fisheries<strong>Department</strong>.4. Prohibit the collection <strong>of</strong> any live animals, other than for personal consumption,except by permit. (Species which may be taken alive for personal consumption arelisted by gazettal notices and are subject to size and bag limits according to therecreational fishing regulations (see Appendix 3)).5. Provide for the collection <strong>of</strong> live mollusc shells or other invertebrates for genuineeducational and study purposes by permit, in accordance with the WildlifeConservation Act.6. Prohibit collecting in Sanctuary Zones except for scientific purposes.39
