Graduate Program in Orthodontics
EDUCATIONAL MISSION
It is the mission of the Orthodontic Program to provide residents with the knowledge and
skills necessary to conduct a patient-centered, evidence-based orthodontic practice. To
this end, we endeavor to produce specialists who possess high quality technical skills, a
broad based scientific foundation, and ability to assess critically and, as appropriate,
implement the scientific and technical advances that will be encountered during their
career in service to others. In the process, we will produce alumni who will use their
knowledge and skill to establish careers in education, research, and patient care but,
regardless of the their choice, engage themselves in support of the profession and
specialty, continue to seek knowledge, and conduct themselves in an ethical and
professional manner.
EDUCATION
PROGRAM GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
1. Provide residents with a sound knowledge of the history, evolution, and current
concepts of orthodontics and craniofacial biology.
Objectives:
prepare residents to be knowledgeable in all aspects of clinical orthodontics.
become certified by The American Board of Orthodontics.
2. Establish the biomechanical principles that underpin orthodontic and dentofacial
therapeutic mechanisms.
Objectives:
enable residents to understand the treatments they provide.
enable improvement in treatment outcomes and the efficiencies of patient care.
3. Relate the biological concepts of growth and development to malocclusion with regard
to the discernment of etiology, determination of diagnosis, formulation of a treatment
plan, execution of treatment, and estimation of prognosis.
Objectives:
enable residents to understand the relationship between biological process and treatment.
enable treatments to be efficient and effective.
