1/30/09 Guidelines for the Initial Dental Radiographic Examination Child or Adolescent Orthodontic Patient (1-17 years of age) Condition Recommended Radiographs Regular dental No previous caries No obvious pathology History of fluoridation Previous caries Obvious caries Deep caries Periodontal disease Tooth trauma Impacted teeth TMJ disorders Cleft palate Syndromes Severe skeletal disorder Instructor prescription With previous or obvious caries With deep caries, trauma, or periodontal disease Panoramic film Cephalogram Panoramic film Bite-wings Cephalogram Panoramic film Bite-wings Periapical films (affected area only) Cephalogram Cone Beam CT Add bite-wings Add periapical films (affected area only) A clinical examination should be conducted before radiographs are taken. Subsequently, it is recommended that a panoramic film (or CBCT) be taken first so that that need for additional x-rays can be determined.
