<strong>Shippensburg</strong> <strong>University</strong>SWK611 Children and Youth at Risk (3 crs.)An in-depth study of the concepts, policies, practices and researchin the field of child services including school social work and childwelfare. In addition, this course will provide a detailed explorationand understanding of a range of at-risk children and youth populationsand their families. This comprehensive understanding willassist practitioners to effectively conduct an assessment, develop atreatment plan listing evidence-based intervention strategies and/or prevention programs that will effectively meet the complex needsof at-risk populations and their families. The challenges and ethicaldilemmas confronting social work practitioners working with at-riskpopulations and their families will also be addressed. Prerequisites:SWK521 and SWK601SWK612 Social Work and the Law (3 crs.)Social workers understand that virtually everything they do professionallyin the 21st century has to include evaluations of risk, legality,funding and unintended consequences. Malpractice appropriatelyreceives much attention in this regard but legislative and regulatoryrequirements regarding funding, grants and contracts, definitionsof disabilities, responsibilities of different levels of government, andmany other legal aspects of the profession must also be considered.Social workers need to be somewhat fluent in the law so they candeal with the convergence of law and social work, social services andsocial policy. Pre- or co-requisite:SWK601.SWK613 Mediation in Social Work Practice (3 crs.)Mediation as an alternate form of dispute resolution is continuing torise and is being used in human services, corporate, labor, consumer,and family issues widely across the United States. Students in theMediation class will focus on practical and theoretical aspects ofmediation and its place in the larger framework of alternate disputeresolution for social work clients. Skills in helping parties findcommon ground, creating a climate for reaching agreement, aspectsof confidentiality, and both directive and non-directive mediationtechniques will be explored. Prerequisites: SWK511 and SWK601.SWK615 Advanced Social Welfare Policy (3 crs.)Course introduces conceptual approaches to policy analysis andassesses selected social policies, programs and services in the areasof income maintenance, health care and personal social services inaccordance with these approaches and with specific reference to theirimpact on special populations. Approximately one-third each onlinecontent, in person with the instructor, and via video conferencing.Prerequisite: SWK515.SWK620 Advanced Micro/Mezzo Social Work Practice (3 crs.)Provides advanced knowledge, practice experience and consultation inboth a classroom setting and in collaboration with practice in the student’sfield placement, which focuses on individuals, families, and/orgroups. The use of the supervisory model in agencies will be exploredin depth. Prerequisite: SWK520; co-requisite: SWK630.SWK621 Advanced Macro Social Work Practice (3 crs.)Assists the student in developing knowledge of administrationsupervision, grant writing, fundraising, and budgeting. The macrosocial work practice course will provide models for developing programsthat promote social and economic justice for the underserved,the poor, and the oppressed populations. Meets two-thirds in theclassroom and one-third online. Prerequisite: SWK 521; co-requisite:SWK630.SWK625 Advanced Research Methods (3 crs.)Focuses on social work practice research paradigms, models, andmethods. Particular attention is given to the conduct of evaluationand assessments projects. Students will conduct independent evaluativeresearch within their field placement settings. also gives thestudent a more in depth exploration of gender and ethnic minorityresearch issues and computer-assisted, descriptive and exploratorydata analysis. Approximately one-third each online content, in personwith the instructor, and via video conferencing. Prerequisite: SWK525.SWK630,631 Advanced Field Practicum I/II (5 crs./4 crs.)Students complete 270 hours of supervised agency/organizationpractice experience during the first semester of the second year. Studentswill be in the field three days per week. In the second semesterstudents will complete 230 hours of field experience for a total of 500hours over the academic year. Prerequisite: SWK530/531 or advancedstanding status; co-requisite: SWK620 or SWK621.SWK632 Capstone Seminar (3 crs.)Taken concurrently with SWK631 provides a bridge between thegraduate student role and functioning as an advanced practitioner.Examines issues and concerns facing social workers in advancedprofessional practice, and integrates and synthesizes knowledge, valueand skill components with field experiences through focused casestudies. Prerequisite: SWK620 or SWK621; co-requisite: SWK631.SWK640 Selected Topics (3 crs.)Provides the opportunity for a range of topics to explore issues andconcerns for the social work profession. Designed for advancedgraduate students. Prerequisite: SWK601 or completion of Foundationyear.Sociology (SOC)SOC410 Family and Society (3 crs.)Focuses on the family as a social institution, a social process, and asan interacting system. Includes emphasis on historical developmentand interrelationship between the family and society. Major theoreticalperspectives are applied to the study of the family. Cross culturaland utopian (U.S.) family movements included. Prerequisite: SOC101or SOC257.SOC425 Sociology of Law (3 crs.)Introduction to study of sociology of law and sociology in law.Primarily looks at legal systems of the United States, primary actorsin those legal systems, social/cultural contests in which laws exist andare created, and how laws both reflect and affect social structure. Notdesigned to be a law course in the law school sense. Examines and appliessociological theories, concepts, and research to a particular arenaof the social structure—laws and legal systems. Prerequisite: SOC101.SOC435 Gender and Leadership (3 crs.)Examines the interrelationship of gender and the broader socialstructure as we come to understand leadership in a variety of settings.Focuses on the larger realm of women and men working, together orotherwise, in leader-follower situations. Examines some of the criticaltheory on gender and leadership and students will apply the lessonslearned to practical examples. Prerequisite: SOC101.SOC445 Sexuality and Sexual Orientation: A Social Approach (3 crs.)Examines the interrelationship of sexuality and the broader socialstructure in a variety of settings. Analyzes some of the critical theoryon gender and sexuality and apply the lessons learned to issuessuch as the globalization of sexuality, transgendered and intersexedindividuals, sexual exploitation and sex trafficking. intentionally not acourse on just sexual orientation; also examines the specific issues, opportunitiesand threats surrounding the social experiences of GLBTQand their allies. Students work together to develop better strategiesfor female/male sexuality and sexual interaction. Prerequisite: SOC101or permission of instructor.SOC452 Contemporary Social Theory (3 crs.)Focuses on 20th-century American sociologists and their contributionsto the discipline. Idiosyncratic, biographical considerations anda broader “schools of theory” perspective will be utilized. Significanttheoretical issues relevant to contemporary sociology also reviewed.Prerequisite: SOC450.106
