Can include researchand/or development related to the topic.Counseling (CNS)CNS490 Selected Topics (1-3 crs.)CNS502 The Role of the Elementary Counselor (3 crs.)Provides the prospective elementary school counselor with an understandingof concepts and techniques essential to the counseling andguidance process in the elementary school. A major consideration isthe emerging role of the elementary counselor and his/her relationshipto other pupil personnel services at that level. Prerequisites:completion of Phase I and CNS585.CNS504 Introduction to School Counseling (3 crs.)Studies the history of school counseling and the development ofcounselors and counseling programs in schools. Provides practicalmeans to make use of counseling and guidance theories andtechniques, as seen in school settings. In the course students willlearn administrative activities that provide the framework for schoolcounseling services. Course content studies prevention and interventionstrategies that contribute to the academic mission of the schoolas well as students’ career, personal, and social development. Effectiveleadership, proactive strategies, and advocacy for students andcounseling programs are also covered.CNS505 Organization and Administration of School CounselingServices (3 crs.)Studies basic philosophy, principles, and current trends in theorganization and administration of comprehensive school counselingprograms. Emphasis is given to line-staff organization, guidancecommittees, counselor-teacher relationships, adult-community guidanceservices, and roles of school personnel and community agenciesin understanding and promoting the school-community guidanceprograms. Prerequisites: completion of Phase I and CNS585.CNS508 Marital, Couple, and Family Counseling (3 crs.)Designed to aid student in gaining experience and competency inthe use of therapeutic interventions with married person, couple,and families. Emphasis on the understanding of prominent theoreticalmodalities and applying the relevant techniques to classroomsimulations. Students gain understanding and experience in dealingtherapeutically with typical couple and family problematic concerns.Prerequisite: completion of Phase I or permission of instructor, CNS 578.CNS509 Multicultural Counseling (3 crs.)Designed to sensitize students to and promote an understandingof multiple cultures. Students will be encouraged to examine theirown attitudes toward various groups, to explore their own identities,and to acquire expertise in the use of therapeutic interventionswith various populations. Emphasis will be placed on the learning ofapproaches and the application of techniques that facilitate inter andintra group interaction.CNS510 Drug and Alcohol Counseling (3 crs.)Designed to aid students in understanding the theories of causationand treatment of alcohol and drug addiction abuse. Students also gainexperience and competency in the use of therapeutic interventionsand techniques through classroom simulations. Prerequisite: completionof Phase I or permission of instructor.CNS512 Group Counseling and Leadership Skills (3 crs.)Students will develop theoretical and experiential understandings ofgroup purpose, development, dynamics, methods, and skills. Topicsinclude characteristics of effective group leadership, group memberroles, and therapeutic factors. Attention is given to adapting strategiesfor various types of groups (i.e., task/work groups, psycho educationgroups, and counseling and psychotherapeutic groups) and acrossdiverse populations. Includes an experiential group component wherestudents will participate as members in a small group activity. Prerequisite:CNS578.CNS515 Career Development (3 crs.)A counseling-oriented course designed to enable the counselor tounderstand the psychosocial dynamics of identity and career developmentthrough the life span. Emphasizes development of counselorcompetencies in the areas of collecting, evaluating, classifying, andusing accurate occupational, avocational, educational, and personalsocialinformational materials. Students will investigate theoriesof career development and career decision-making models; theirrelevance and utility to students’ personal and professional interestswill be considered throughout the course. Also considered are occupationand labor markets (micro and macro), computer-based careerresources, and career relevant assessment instruments and techniques.Career counseling processes applicable to populations in a globaleconomy are also studied. Other topics include the interrelationshipsamong and between life roles and cultural factors, career developmentprogramming, educational planning, and ethical and legal issues inthe career counseling process.CNS519 Implications for Human Development for Counseling (3 crs.)Specifically designed for counselors. Content is rooted in developmentaltheory with an emphasis on identity development. Professionalcounselors pay particular attention to our clients’ developmentacross the lifespan; implications of their development on all aspectsof life weigh importantly on the way we conceptualize clients’ challenges,adjustments, disorders, and growth. The information andexperiences gained will serve as a structural foundation for understandingtheories of development and their significance in the workprofessional counselors perform.CNS522 Assessment Techniques (3 crs.)The study of assessment as used in counseling and the helping processesincluding historical foundations, current concepts, procedures,psychometrics, and techniques. Students will learn assessment skillsincluding selection, administration, scoring, interpretation, use oftechnology, and critique of specific measures. Practical applicationscovered will include assessing students with special needs, assessmentbias, serving diverse populations, and legal and ethical principles ofmeasurement. Emphasis is on the appropriate and meaningful use ofassessment data in diagnosis, case conceptualization, treatment planning,and referral. Prerequisite: CNS578.CNS524 The DSM and Psychopathology for a CNS Perspective (3 crs.)Studies the classification system of psychopathology. Special emphasisplaced on building counseling models based on the integrationof the classification and the client’s individual situation. Prerequisite:CNS559.CNS530 Clinical Supervision Theory and Techniques (3 crs.)Designed to help counselors in a variety of settings to develop and/or enhance their professional functioning as clinical supervisors. Noprior supervision experience is necessary. A concurrent experienceproviding supervision will be included in the course. Prerequisite:Master’s degree in counseling or its equivalent.CNS531 Advanced Study in Multicultural Issues (3 crs.)Designed for current practitioners in helping services who alreadyhave earned a master’s degree who desire to expand knowledge andskills in working with diverse populations and in creating a societywhere “freedom and justice for all” can become a reality. Prerequisite:Master’s degree in counseling or its equivalent.79
