<strong>Shippensburg</strong> <strong>University</strong>The Office of Professional, Continuing, and Distance EducationStudies collaborates with the academic colleges to develop, administerand support courses, certificates, and degrees that address theprofessional development, continuing education, and service needsof southcentral Pennsylvania. The emphasis is on nontraditionalstudents, including adult, part-time students, and nontraditionallearning experiences including off-campus locations and the use ofdistance education technologies and accelerated formats. The officeprovides faculty, departments, and colleges with the opportunity toinitiate new programming outside the confines of standard resourcelimitations. The office also serves as a bridge to the external communitythrough a variety of outreach and service activities.Continuing and Distance EducationProgramsThe Office of Professional, Continuing and Distance Educationoffers both continuing education and distance education courses andprograms at the undergraduate and graduate level through a varietyof formats. Information about all programs can be found at ship.edu/extended.• Degree Programs — Off-campus degree programs are designedso that individuals may earn a <strong>Shippensburg</strong> <strong>University</strong>undergraduate or graduate degree at a location other than themain university campus. These locations have included, butare not limited to, the Dixon <strong>University</strong> Center in Harrisburg,Harrisburg Area Community College in Gettysburg,the Milton Hershey School in Hershey, the Spring GroveEducational Center in Spring Grove, and the York LearningCenter in York. These degree programs are often designed tomeet the needs of non-traditional students (adult, part-time,and transfer students) and courses are offered in formats thatbest match their availability (evenings, weekends, summers,accelerated schedules, and/or distance education). Some of<strong>Shippensburg</strong>’s off-campus programs are designed as cohortprograms. Cohorts encourage camaraderie and support amongclassmates since the same group of students moves through thedegree program together.• Certificate Programs – Credit certificate programs are designedfor professionals who seek advanced study in a particularsubject area. Courses build upon core competencies andprovide a balance of theory and practice as appropriate to thediscipline. These programs typically require a minimum of 12credits for completion and consist of both post-baccalaureateand post-master’s certificates. Prerequisites vary by programand there is no application fee required.• Online Courses - An online course delivered via the Internetis designed to allow you to earn college credit from your home,office, or while traveling. Online courses may include exercises,projects, and collaborative assignments. The learning environmentmay feature tutorials and courses with audio lectures,photo materials, discussions, chat rooms, readings, illustrations,and video.• K-12 Educators Institute — The K-12 Educators Institute isa series of short-term graduate courses offered for professionalsat all levels of K-12 instruction. Offered mainly during thesummer, K-12 courses help meet the professional developmentand Act 48 needs of educators. Courses range from 1 to 3graduate credits and cover a variety of subject areas such as: art,biology, communications, counseling, education, exercise science,geography, social studies, social work, and technology toname just a few. These courses are offered online, on-campus,and at a variety of off-campus locations including K-12 schoolsand intermediate units in south central Pennsylvania. Mostcourses can be completed in an accelerated format.• AP Academy — The Central Pennsylvania Advanced Placement(AP) Academy was created in 2002 as a way to meet theeducational needs of teachers and students in Central Pennsylvania.As an educational partnership between the CapitalArea Intermediate Unit, the Lincoln Intermediate Unit,<strong>Shippensburg</strong> Area School District, the College Board, and<strong>Shippensburg</strong> <strong>University</strong>, the academy strives to train new APteachers and further the professional development of existingAP teachers.• Short-Term Study Abroad — The Office of Professional,Continuing and Distance Education helps to coordinatefaculty-led short term study abroad courses that offer studentsthe opportunity to have an international educational experiencein one of the most cost and time efficient manners possible.Short-term study abroad courses are sponsored and taughtby <strong>Shippensburg</strong> <strong>University</strong> faculty at various times throughoutthe year, primarily in the summer, and typically range from oneto four weeks in duration.• Academic Camps — The Office of Professional, Continuingand Distance Education helps to coordinate a variety ofsummer camps designed to provide academic enrichment forK-12 students. These camps focus on academic specialty areasof interest to both faculty and students, and are characterizedby a high degree of hands-on activities for students. Camps areoffered in both day camp and residential formats.• Non-Credit Programs — The Office of Professional, Continuingand Distance Education sponsors non-credit professionaland non-professional programming, both on and offcampus.
