An MSW permitsgraduates to work in a variety of human service programs and agenciesin an advanced clinical and/or administrative capacity. The flexibilityof the social work degree provides graduates with many optionsas they pursue their careers in helping fields.MissionThe mission of the MU-SU MSW program is to provide accessiblesocial work graduate education in the south central region ofPennsylvania in order to prepare students for advanced generalistpractice and to provide professional leadership and contribute to thedevelopment and dissemination of social work practice knowledge.Program GoalsThe MU-SU MSW program seeks to:1. Prepare students for competent advanced generalist practice, witha focus on rural client systems, through the acquisition and demonstrationof social work knowledge, skills, and values.2. Provide leadership and service for the social welfare systems andthe social work profession.3. Foster commitment to professional development and the creationand dissemination of knowledge.Program StructureThe program is designed for students who have no previous socialwork education and for those who want to build upon their baccalaureatesocial work education. Students will be admitted full- orpart-time. Courses are offered evenings with some Saturday classes,which are electives. State-of-the-art technology will permit studentsto acquire social work knowledge, skills, and values through multipleeducational methods including teleconferencing and web-basedactivities. Students will take all courses on the campus where they areenrolled, while benefiting from the quality faculty and resources ofboth universities.AccreditationThe MU-SU MSW program is fully accredited by the Council onSocial Work Education (CSWE).Admissions ClassificationsStudents may apply for regular or advanced standing admission.Regular standing admission is for students who completed a baccalaureatedegree with a major from other than a CSWE-accreditedsocial work program and for students who did graduate from aCSWE-accredited social work program within the past eight yearsbut did not meet the QPA requirements for advanced standing. Studentsmay apply for advanced standing admission if they graduatedfrom a CSWE-accredited social work program within the past eightyears and do meet the QPA requirements as described in the admissionguidelines.Admission GuidelinesCampusCandidates may choose to apply through either <strong>Shippensburg</strong> orMillersville <strong>University</strong>. If all seats are full at one campus, successfulapplicants will be given the option to enroll through the other campus,if seats are available. Applicants desiring admission to a specificcampus may also be placed on a waiting list if all seats are full.QPAApplicants for Regular Standing admission must have a minimumcumulative quality point average of 2.8 on a 4.0 scale from a regionallyaccredited undergraduate institution. In exceptional cases, applicantswho lack the required quality point average but whose otherqualifications are outstanding may be admitted on a probationarybasis. Applicants admitted on probation must earn a 3.0 quality pointaverage by the end of the first 12 credits.Applicants for Advanced Standing admission must have earned abaccalaureate degree in the last eight years from a CSWE-accreditedsocial work program with an overall QPA of 3.0 in all undergraduatecourse work and a major QPA of 3.25 or higher on a 4.0 scale.Exemption from Foundation (First-Year) CoursesStudents who graduated with a baccalaureate degree from aCSWE-accredited social work program who are not eligible foradvanced standing may be eligible for exemptions from first-yearfoundation courses other than practice and field instruction in whichthey have earned a grade of B or higher within the past eight years.Exemptions will reduce the total number of credits a student mustearn to graduate. The Admissions Committee will send a letter notifyingthe applicant of the exemptions.WaiversStudents may apply for waivers from courses when they havealready demonstrated proficiency in the course content at a graduatelevel with a grade of a B or higher. When requesting considerationfor a waiver, a student must submit a Request for Waiver form andcourse syllabi to the program co-director. A waiver will not reduce thenumber of required credits for graduation but will allow a student totake a more advanced course or an elective course.Entrance ExaminationOnly applicants whose QPA falls below the minimum standardof 2.8 need to take either the Miller Analogies Test (MAT) or theGeneral <strong>Graduate</strong> Record Exam (GRE) as part of the admissionprocess. Scores should not be more than five years old at the time ofapplication.57
