Curriculum and Instruction includes thefollowing cluster choices: early childhood education, elementary education,middle level education as well as biology, English, geography/earth science, history, mathematics, and modern languages secondaryeducation. The early childhood cluster includes three options: M.Ed.only; M.Ed. with state certification for those who hold elementary,middle level, or special education certification; and M.Ed. with statecertification for those who have no previous teaching certification ora certificate other than mentioned in option 2. The M.Ed. in readingincludes certification as a reading specialist.Admission to Teacher Education ProgramsAll applications for admission to our Teacher Education programsmust begin with application to the School of <strong>Graduate</strong> Studies.The Teacher Education department will supply the applicant withrequired program application forms after notification the individualhas met the requirements for the graduate school.Applicants to the Teacher Education programs must providereview materials by the specified date to ensure consideration. If theapplicant is interested in starting in the spring semester all materialsmust be received by September 1. If the applicant is interested instarting in the summer semester(s) all materials must be received byFebruary 1. If applicants are interested in starting in the Fall semesterall materials must be received by April 1. Students must be interviewedand admitted to the program before they will be allowed toenroll in courses.1. Applicants must have a baccalaureate degree from an accreditedcollege or university.2. Applicants must present an official transcript showing at least a2.75 cumulative quality point average for undergraduate studies.Those who do not qualify will be required to take either the<strong>Graduate</strong> Record Exam (GRE) or the Miller Analogies Test(MAT) prior to admission. Applicants for certification programsmust have a 3.0 cumulative quality point average for undergraduatestudents.3. Applicants to the reading specialist program are expected to haveprior certification in either elementary or secondary education.Candidates lacking certification are not eligible for admission toany program other than early childhood.4. It is strongly recommended applicants possess relevant experienceprior to admission to graduate study.5. With the application to the graduate school, the applicant willreceive a packet of materials containing reference forms, a personaldata form, and a request for a résumé.6. Submit all the above materials to the graduate office on formsprovided by the department. Only the forms provided by the departmentwill be accepted. When all documents have been returned,program faculty will invite the applicant to the next scheduledinterview session.7. Appear for an interview with one of the faculty.8. Following the interview each applicant will be assessed by theprogram with regard to relevant life/work/academic experiencesas well as overall impression from the on-campus interview andapplicant’s references.Program RequirementsIn order to be approved for graduation, each student is required tohave a planning sheet on file in the graduate office, approved by theassigned academic advisor.The courses for a student who enrolls in a certification programalong with a master’s degree may include undergraduate course work.There may be from two to four semesters of these courses which willbe identified on an individual basis. Candidates for initial certificationmust demonstrate competency in student teaching.Elementary Education SupervisorFor information concerning the post-master’s degree programleading to Pennsylvania certification as an Elementary EducationSupervisor, refer to Supervisory Certification Programs in the EducationalLeadership and Special Education Department.Curriculum and Instruction (M.Ed.)The curriculum and instruction master’s degree program isintended for individuals who possess a teaching certificate. Only theearly childhood education cluster has options that do not requirestudents to hold certification. The degree is designed to enhanceteaching and learning through exploration of theoretical principlesand practical applications to educational settings. The 36-creditM.Ed. program consists of a core of 18 credits in four areas thatcontribute to best practice: curriculum and assessment (3 credits), effectiveteaching and leadership (6 credits), the learner (6 credits), andresearch (3 credits).In addition to the core courses, students will select one of the followingclusters of 18 credits:• Early Childhood Education• Elementary Education• Middle Level Education• Secondary Biology Education• Secondary English Education• Secondary Geography/Earth Science Education• Secondary History Education• Secondary Mathematics Education• Secondary Modern Languages EducationStudents in the early childhood, elementary and middle level clustersare all required to take TCH609 Internship and Action ResearchSeminar.
