Thework is designed for intending secondary school teachers wishingto specialise in teaching Biology, Chemistry, English, Geography,History, Mathematics, Modern Languages, Physics and ReligiousEducation. A range <strong>of</strong> additional optional courses is <strong>of</strong>fered andall course members take part in a programme <strong>of</strong> activities relatedto cross-curricular and whole school topics such as Inclusionand Early Child Matters. Members <strong>of</strong> the course are required tobecome members <strong>of</strong> a College; full advice on this matter is givento all successful applicants for admission.Applications can only be made through the <strong>Graduate</strong> TeacherTraining Registry: www.gttr.ac.uk There is no <strong>of</strong>ficial closing datefor admission although applicants are advised to apply early in theacademic year preceding entry.ϐϐResearch ProgrammesDPhil in EducationThe Department <strong>of</strong>fers a programme leading to DPhil inEducation. The Department was rated 5 in the last ResearchAssessment Exercise and has a number <strong>of</strong> intellectuallystimulating research groups which provide the framework fora vibrant research culture. Research students will normally be amember <strong>of</strong> their supervisor’s research group.All candidates are admitted as Probationer Research Studentsand are required to undertake comprehensive research trainingduring their first year. The DPhil is awarded after successfulsubmission <strong>of</strong> a thesis and a viva voce examination.The Department has a number <strong>of</strong> ESRC quota awards availableeach year for home/EU students. Six terms <strong>of</strong> residence in <strong>Oxford</strong>are required for candidates working for the degree <strong>of</strong> DPhil.
