Thework is designed for intending secondary school teachers wishingto specialise in teaching Biology, Chemistry, English, Geography,History, Mathematics, Modern Languages, Physics and ReligiousEducation. A range of additional optional courses is offered andall course members take part in a programme of activities relatedto cross-curricular and whole school topics such as Inclusionand Early Child Matters. Members of the course are required tobecome members of a College; full advice on this matter is givento all successful applicants for admission.Applications can only be made through the Graduate TeacherTraining Registry: www.gttr.ac.uk There is no official closing datefor admission although applicants are advised to apply early in theacademic year preceding entry.ϐϐResearch ProgrammesDPhil in EducationThe Department offers a programme leading to DPhil inEducation. The Department was rated 5 in the last ResearchAssessment Exercise and has a number of intellectuallystimulating research groups which provide the framework fora vibrant research culture. Research students will normally be amember of their supervisor’s research group.All candidates are admitted as Probationer Research Studentsand are required to undertake comprehensive research trainingduring their first year. The DPhil is awarded after successfulsubmission of a thesis and a viva voce examination.The Department has a number of ESRC quota awards availableeach year for home/EU students. Six terms of residence in Oxfordare required for candidates working for the degree of DPhil.
