Oriental <strong>Studies</strong> (continued)SOUTH ASIAN STUDIESThere is a long tradition at <strong>Oxford</strong> <strong>of</strong> the study <strong>of</strong> South Asia atpostgraduate level. Not only does the <strong>University</strong> have unrivalledlibrary and museum holdings for this research area, but also staffincludes the Boden Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Sanskrit, the Spalding Pr<strong>of</strong>essor<strong>of</strong> Eastern Religions (also a Sanskritist), the Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> IndianHistory and Culture (Marathi, Persian), and the Numata Pr<strong>of</strong>essor<strong>of</strong> Buddhist <strong>Studies</strong> (Sanskrit, Tibetan, Mongolian), as well aslecturers in Hindi, Sanskrit, and Tibetan and Himalayan <strong>Studies</strong>.In addition, the Faculty cooperates with staff members <strong>of</strong> manyother departments to maintain a dynamic research environment,and there are also postgraduate degrees with a South Asian focusin History, Development <strong>Studies</strong>, and Contemporary India (seeArea <strong>Studies</strong>).ϐ ϐ<strong>Graduate</strong> DestinationsFurther research into subjects within the area <strong>of</strong> Oriental <strong>Studies</strong>.Educational roles in universities and museums. Government andindustry roles.MPhil in Classical Indian ReligionThis programme attempts to introduce students to classicalIndian religion in a way which bases understanding on originalsources and equips them to continue in the same vein. Formally,the course is in two parts. The first, <strong>of</strong> five months, is an intensivestudy <strong>of</strong> the rudiments <strong>of</strong> Sanskrit.
