It is also intended to take students to the pointwhere they can consider embarking on doctoral research incuneiform studies (in Akkadian and/or Sumerian). The coursefocus is on study <strong>of</strong> the two principal ancient languages <strong>of</strong> ancientMesopotamia, Syria and the surrounding regions. Considerablestress is also placed on knowledge <strong>of</strong> the literature, cultural andpolitical history and archaeology <strong>of</strong> the area. Teaching is provided jointly by members <strong>of</strong>the Faculties <strong>of</strong> Oriental <strong>Studies</strong> and Theology, but teaching in allthree options may not be available every year.
