It is also intended to take students to the pointwhere they can consider embarking on doctoral research incuneiform studies (in Akkadian and/or Sumerian). The coursefocus is on study of the two principal ancient languages of ancientMesopotamia, Syria and the surrounding regions. Considerablestress is also placed on knowledge of the literature, cultural andpolitical history and archaeology of the area. Teaching is provided jointly by members ofthe Faculties of Oriental Studies and Theology, but teaching in allthree options may not be available every year.
