TheClassics Faculty as a whole received a 5* top rating in the lastResearch Assessment Exercise (2001) and the top rating <strong>of</strong> 24 inthe last Quality Assurance Exercise (2000).See: www.classics.ox.ac.uk/admissions/graduate/index.aspϐϐTaught ProgrammesMSt in Greek and/or Roman Languages and LiteratureThe MSt is the normal course for our Master’s Students, and theone which we recommend unless there are particular reasons forpreferring the MPhil. In this you take three options:|| one is normally a 10,000 word dissertation|| the two others may be text-based (subjects such as GreekTragedy, Cicero or Neronian Literature; self-designed optionsare possible and common here) or topics such as literarytheory, papyrology, palaeography, and textual criticismAll students attend a class on Research Techniques in ClassicalLiterature, extending over two terms. This includes units ontopics such as the history <strong>of</strong> classical scholarship and on researchresources, and students present their own work in progress.Language classes are also available in Greek and Latin at both theelementary and intermediate levels.Length <strong>of</strong> programme: One yearMPhil in Greek and/or Roman Languages and LiteratureThe MPhil is taken by fewer students. You <strong>of</strong>fer:|| a thesis <strong>of</strong> up to 25,000 words|| two options chosen from Lists A and B:|| List A is <strong>of</strong> major literary texts (subjects such as GreekTragedy, Cicero or Neronian Literature; self-designedoptions are possible too)|| List B comprises more technical subjects such as thetextual criticism <strong>of</strong> Greek or Latin texts, papyrology,comparative philology, and literary theoryAs in the MSt, students attend the class on Research Techniquesin Classical Literature.
