Phil SayerBi ScottAshmolean MuseumϐLibraries, museums andϐother facilities<strong>Oxford</strong> has an extremely rich and diverselibrary service provided by over one hundredlibraries. There are major research libraries,libraries attached to the faculties anddepartments <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong>, and collegelibraries. There are also substantial electronicresources. The principal libraries (includingthose listed individually below) are part <strong>of</strong> theintegrated <strong>Oxford</strong> <strong>University</strong> Library Services(OULS).The largest library is the Bodleian Librarywith a stock <strong>of</strong> over seven million itemsand a staff <strong>of</strong> over 400. It is a legal depositlibrary with extensive research collectionsand is mainly reference-only. The Bodleian,the Sackler Library and the Taylor InstitutionLibrary have national and international roles asresearch libraries. The Social Science Libraryalso has a large research collection.In the humanities and social sciences thereare also libraries with a primary responsibilityto serve undergraduates, although some alsohave substantial research collections. Manyscience departments have small researchcollections mainly for the use <strong>of</strong> the staff andpostgraduate students <strong>of</strong> the department,though a minority are much larger. The HealthCare Libraries, located in the hospitals, servepostgraduate requirements in clinical medicine.Electronic resourcesOxLIP, <strong>Oxford</strong> Libraries’ InformationPlatform, is a gateway to thousands <strong>of</strong>electronic resources including full-text books,journals and newspapers, library cataloguesincluding OLIS (<strong>Oxford</strong> Libraries’ onlinecatalogue), abstracting and indexing services,current awareness services, reference works,<strong>Oxford</strong> Digital Library (ODL) providing accessto a growing number <strong>of</strong> digital collections,statistical, biographical, and geographicalresources, and high-quality web pages. Whenpublishing and copyright became subject tostatute the Bodleian became, and remains,one <strong>of</strong> the libraries <strong>of</strong> legal deposit. Materialpublished elsewhere than in Great Britain andIreland is also extensively acquired.The Library’s collections are housed inseveral buildings. The central group includesthe Old Library, the Radcliffe Camera and theNew Library. Most <strong>of</strong> the Library’s holdings<strong>of</strong> some seven million volumes are housed inbookstacks and have to be ordered to readingrooms. Reading rooms on the central sitecontain selected material on English, history,theology, classics, bibliography, education,music, geography, philosophy and LatinAmerican studies. It covers all theNatural Sciences together with Medicine andPsychology. It is the largest British universitygeneral scientific library, with over 20 miles <strong>of</strong>shelves.The Library has about 1 million volumes withan annual intake <strong>of</strong> over 20,000 volumes. All the books are on open shelves.The Library has reserved seats for some lawgraduate students and visitors. In addition tolaw material acquired under the legal deposit,there are extensive holdings <strong>of</strong> the legalpublications <strong>of</strong> Commonwealth countries andthe United States. There is good coverage<strong>of</strong> the European Union and <strong>of</strong> the membercountries <strong>of</strong> the former Soviet Union andEastern Europe.
