Education (continued)Social SciencesϐϐTaught ProgrammesMSc in Educational Research MethodologyThe course aims to give prospective educational researchers andresearch students the comprehensive, systemic and wide-rangingfoundation <strong>of</strong> knowledge, understanding and skills that they willneed to undertake research competently and flexibly. It is plannedso that it can be taken either as a free-standing one-year courseor as the first stage <strong>of</strong> a programme leading to a higher researchdegree such as a DPhil. A major part <strong>of</strong> the course, occupyingover one third <strong>of</strong> the student’s time, will be spent on working withan individual supervisor to plan the best way <strong>of</strong> investigating aresearch topic <strong>of</strong> the student’s choice.The course is assessed through three papers. The first paper,Foundations <strong>of</strong> Educational Research, is assessed by two essays;the second paper, Strategies <strong>of</strong> Educational Research, is assessedby an unseen written examination; the third paper consists <strong>of</strong> aportfolio <strong>of</strong> reports <strong>of</strong> quantitative and qualitative data analysis.This course and the Department have been recognised byESRC, and award ESRC studentships.|| Length <strong>of</strong> programme: One year full-time or two years’part-time|| Core and optional courses and programme specification:www.education.ox.ac.uk/courses/masters/ermmaster/index.phpMSc in Education (Comparative and International Education)This is a course leading to a post-experience degree inComparative and International <strong>Studies</strong> in Education. It aims to promote students’ critical understanding<strong>of</strong> developmental theories and research and the use <strong>of</strong> thisknowledge in the design and evaluation <strong>of</strong> programmes aimed atpromoting children’s development. A core objective is to promotereflection and discussion about how theories <strong>of</strong> child developmentinform practice and how challenges faced in educational and caresettings call for further theoretical and research enquiry. Thecourse consists <strong>of</strong> three papers and is examined by long essays.MSc in Education (e-Learning)This one-year, full-time course consists <strong>of</strong> three papers and adissertation. The three papers are on Historical, Theoretical andTechnological Foundations <strong>of</strong> e-Learning; Practical Applications<strong>of</strong> e-Learning; and Foundations <strong>of</strong> Educational Research. Thethree papers are assessed by long essays. The threepapers are assessed just after Easter, after which studentscontinue with work on their research-based dissertation which issubmitted in September.|| Length <strong>of</strong> programme: One year full-time|| Core and optional courses and programme specification:www.education.ox.ac.uk/courses/masters/hemaster/MSc in Applied Linguistics and Second Language AcquisitionThis one-year, full-time or two-year, part-time modular courseaims to: provide students with the intellectual challenge <strong>of</strong>situating second language acquisition and language pedagogyfirmly in an internationally recognised field <strong>of</strong> research, namely,Applied Linguistics; develop critical analysis, problem solving skillsand research skills; encourage cross-fertilisation <strong>of</strong> knowledgeand experience between English as a foreign language and othermodern foreign languages. The course <strong>of</strong>fers an additionaloptional module in English Language Teaching, thereby linkingthe overall qualification to the pr<strong>of</strong>essional world as well as theacademic.
