There areten departments in the Division: Chemistry, Computing,Earth Sciences, Engineering Science, Materials, Mathematics,Physics, Plant Sciences, Statistics and Zoology. The LifeSciences Interface Doctoral Training Centre and theSystems Biology Doctoral Training Centre are also basedin the Division. Each department is amongst the very bestin its field in the United Kingdom, and all have outstandinginternational reputations for research and teaching.We have extensive links with other leading universities,research institutes, public sector bodies, and business andindustry, in the UK and abroad. Teaching is a major partof the Division’s activities and a number of highly ratedtaught Master’s courses are offered. Research at theinterface between disciplines is strongly encouraged, bothwithin the mathematical, life and physical sciences, andwithin the medical and environmental sciences. There areopportunities for graduate students in all departments tostudy for doctoral degrees, and in many departments tostudy for Master of Science by Research degrees, underthe supervision of leading researchers in their fields. Ourgraduates are much in demand from academia, business andindustry, government and the professions.The research interests of each department, andprogrammes of study offered, are set out in the followingsections.
